Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 review
Pop-up camera and in-box wireless charger
The Mi Mix 3 is likely to be very popular because of two features. The first feature is a pop-up camera that does away with the display notch. The second feature is the wireless charger that is included in the box, a first as far as we can recall.
Full Screen Display
The Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 has a 6.39” Full Screen Display and as we have already mentioned, there is no camera notch taking a chunk out of the viewing experience. This design gives the phone a 93.4% screen-to-body ratio.
Keep up to Date
Fill in the form and be the first to know when the Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 is released.
If you aren’t aware of Xiaomi then you will get buyer’s confidence through knowing that a lot of the phone’s components are made by brands that you will recognise. The first is the AMOLED display, which is made by Samsung.
The display has FHD+ resolution and this equates to 2,340x 1080 pixels at 403 pixels per inch. The display is protected behind Corning Gorilla Glass 5 and there are a number of viewing modes that can be useful under certain circumstances. These include:
- Always-on Display
- Sunlight Mode - up to 600nit brightness (extremely bright)
- Night Mode
- Reading Mode
Multifunctional magnetic slider
The multifunctional magnetic slider is what makes the Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 stand out against its competition. The slider reveals the camera, but customisable functions can also be linked to the opening of the shutter.
Slide functions can include checking the weather, replying to messages, opening the recorder or opening another one of your favourite apps. To ensure a long life, the slider design has been tested to 300,000 sliding operations.

Ceramic meets aluminium
The Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 has a coloured ceramic back and an aluminium 7-Series frame. The frame curves over on all four sides and there are three colours to choose from; Onyx Black, Sapphire Blue, and Jade Green. The phone feels substantial with a weight of 218g and the slide hasn’t added thickness at 8.46mm.
The Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor has been reserved for the most expensive phones but Xiaomi now delivers it with a phone that is a fraction of the price of these costly phones. The stats include a 2.8GHz octa-core processor with 6GB RAM, which is extremely good for gaming and multitasking.

Simply put, the processor can handle anything that you chuck at it.
Phone Set Up
This Xiaomi phone has a fingerprint sensor positioned on the back, for security and unlocking of the phone. Face Unlock will arrive in an over-the-air software update in certain regions, but these regions are yet to be confirmed.
New: OPPO Find X review
The Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 has a fixed memory of 128GB. This is plenty of memory for you to bring over your old content and download lots of new content. You can’t expand the memory but we don’t see this as being an issue, particularly because you can store your photos and videos online, in the cloud.
Storing photos and videos in the cloud makes them accessible on any device you use, so there is a real bonus here for using Google Photos.
The Mi Mix 3 uses Google’s latest version of its operating system; Android 9 Pie. Xiaomi overlays its user interface which is called MIUI 10. This interface is highly customisable with themes, with the original theme using a pastel colour palette.
Features that are worth a mention include:
- Gesture controlled shortcuts
- Dual apps
- One-handed mode
- Dedicated AI button - linked to the Google Assistant
Camera & Video
Sony dual camera
Here we see another example of quality hardware in use, with the dual camera. There is a 24MP lens and a 2MP lens, both made by Sony. The camera has received a DxOMark photo score of 108, which is just short of the 114 scores of the Huawei P20 Pro (currently the top tanking smartphone camera).

DxOMark has given the video quality a score of 93, which is once again very respectable. The video camera offers 4K quality video recording, AI Music Pairing for audiovisual perfection, and 960 frames per second slow motion video recording.
Dual selfie camera
The Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 has a dual selfie camera (12MP + 12MP), making it ultra-sensitive to light. Selfie cam features include:
- Selfie Timer
- Face Recognition
- Magic Mirror
- AI Eye Lighting
- AI Portrait Mode
- AI Beautify
- AI Studio Lighting
- AI Dynamic Bokeh
- AI Makeup
- AI Real-time Video Background Blurring
Wireless charger included
The Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 has a 3,200mAh capacity battery and this supports QC4+ quick charging. The biggest news, however, is that there is a wireless charger in the box. You can say goodbye to cables and the 10W wireless charger has a 30% improvement in efficiency, compared to previous models.
