Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 5G review
Pop-up camera and all-screen design
Our Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 5G review takes a look at a phone that is likely to be a popular choice because of two features. The first thing is a pop-up camera that does away with the display notch. The second feature is the superb display, as there is no camera notch you get an all-screen viewing experience with this Xiaomi phone.

Ceramic and aluminium
The Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 5G has been crafted with a coloured ceramic back and an aluminium 7-Series frame. The frame curves over on all four sides and there are two colours; Onyx Black and Sapphire Blue. The phone feels substantial with a weight of 225g and the slide hasn’t added thickness at 8.5mm. This version of the phone is slightly heavier than the standard Mi Mix 3 but with 5G technology, on board you can forgive the extra grams.

The Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor is usually reserved for the most expensive phones but Xiaomi offers it with a phone that is a fraction of the price. The stats include a 2.8GHz octa-core processor with 6GB RAM, which is extremely good for any task, no matter how demanding.
Phone Set Up
This Xiaomi phone has a fingerprint sensor positioned on the back, for security and unlocking of the phone. Face Unlock will arrive in an over-the-air software update in certain regions, but these regions are yet to be confirmed.
The Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 has a fixed memory of either 64GB or 128GB. You can’t expand the memory but we don’t see this as being an issue, particularly because you can store your photos and videos online if needed.
Storing photos and videos in the cloud makes them accessible on any device you use, so there is a real bonus here for using Google Photos.
The Mi Mix 3 5G uses the latest version of Android 9 Pie. Xiaomi overlays its user interface which is called MIUI 10. This interface is highly customisable with themes, with the original theme using a pastel colour palette.
Features os the Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 MIUI include:
- One-handed mode
- Gesture controlled shortcuts
- Dual apps
- Dedicated AI button - linked to the Google Assistant
The main difference between this version of the Mi Mix 3 and the standard version is, of course, 5G technology. When you are in a 5G coverage area the phone has the hardware required to give you access to blistering speeds.
Some of the main benefits of 5G include:
- Ultra fast downloads
- AR/VR gaming
- Stable video conferencing
The 5G network is still in its initial rollout phase in the UK so you may not always be able to get this type of connection. The Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 5G will seamlessly switch between 5G, 4G or 3G depending on where you are. You will always be connected even if you are not in a 5G area.
