Xiaomi Mi 8 review
A flagship phone that you can afford
Our Xiaomi Mi 8 review comes on the back of Xiaomi finally launching in the UK. You can think of the Xiaomi Mi 8 as a flagship phone that you can afford and trust, with components from Samsung, Sony and Qualcomm giving this phone a great spec sheet.
Samsung AMOLED display
The Xiaomi Mi 8, as we have mentioned, makes great use of using components from reputable brands. The first of these is the 6.21” Samsung AMOLED screen and this outputs high contrast and a wide colour gamut. The screen has an exceptional resolution at 2248x 1080 pixels.

You might be thinking that this screen size will be too big for your pocket, but you would be wrong. With a frameless display, the overall phone size is that of a 5.5” traditional smartphone.
Design materials and Qualcomm processor
This Xiaomi phone has a curved glass back that fits almost seamlessly onto an aluminium frame. The phone is pretty slim at 7.6mm and light in comparison to some flagship phones, at 175g.
Inside, is the processor used by most flagship phones over the past year. This is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 2.8GHZ octa-core processor with 6GB RAM, which offers fast app launching.

Infrared face recognition
The Xiaomi Mi 8 uses infrared face recognition so that you can unlock your phone under low light. If you don’t like the idea of facial recognition, then you can use the fingerprint sensor on the back instead.
This Xiaomi smartphone has a fixed 64GB memory and this can be used to bring over your photos, videos, and apps. There is no memory card slot, which won’t be an issue for most people. If you do save tons of content then you can tackle this problem by making use of online cloud storage.
The Xiaomi Mi 8 tackles those annoying issues when your GPS navigation doesn’t work. Better positioning within urban areas, such as cities where there are often high-rise office blocks, is solved through the use of dual-frequency GPS.
Android and MIUI
Google’s Android 8.1 Oreo operating system will be familiar to most people and Xiaomi tweaks the experience a little with its MIUI 10 user interface. Features worthy of a mention include:
- Create your own personal voice commands
- Anoptimised driving mode
- Acustomisable notification centre
- Evening Eyesight Protection with a special blue light filter
Camera & Video
The Xiaomi Mi 8 has a Sony produced dual 12MP + 12MP camera. There are a portrait lens and a wide-angle panoramic lens, which caters to the two main types of photos that you are likely to take. If you snap away under low light then there is multi-frame noise reduction. If you want to shoot video then you can record at a quality of up to 4K.
If you like taking selfies then there is a 20MP Micro-Cosmetic Beauty camera. This has several AI features, such as bokeh depth-of-field effects (blurred backgrounds).
