Vodafone Smart E8 review
4G for everyone
Our mobile phone reviews cover devices from the top-end down and today we are taking a look at one of the most affordable phones on the market. Our Vodafone Smart E8 review finds a phone priced from £49 on pay as you go (contract prices to be confirmed).
5” display, design and performance
The Vodafone Smart E8 has a 5” LCD display, which makes the phone pocket and bag friendly, at least when compared to some of the 5.5” - 6” phones that we see today. The screen has a basic FWVGA resolution, which works out to 480 x 854 pixels at 195 pixels per inch.

The design is actually quite nice with the Slate Blue polycarbonate back having a textured pattern applied to it. Even the Vodafone logo on the back fits well. The Vodafone Smart E8 is 9.15mm thick and weighs 169g.
New: Huawei Y7 review
The phone is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 210 1.1GHz quad-core processor with 1GB RAM. It is good to see here that while the focus has been on creating a super-cheap phone, that the quality Qualcomm brand has been chosen to supply the processor.
Phone Set Up
Security, user accounts and transferring content
The Vodafone Smart E8 gives you the choice to have PIN, password or pattern security. If you find it annoying having to constantly enter your security code then you can activate Smart Lock, to improve the experience.

Smart Lock keeps the phone unlocked when it senses that it is on your body or that you are at home. Once the phone is locked you can wake it up by tapping the power key or by double tapping the screen.
The Vodafone Smart E8 also supports Tap & Pay contactless payments.
You can set up different user accounts, with their own storage space, screen lock and wallpaper, if you are not the sole user of the phone. There is a 8GB memory for transferring content over from an old smartphone or iPhone and this can be increased by inserting a memory card of up to 128GB.
Android Nougat OS
The Vodafone Smart E8 runs on Android 7.1 Nougat, which is arguably the best plus point for this phone. The latest Nougat features are at your fingertips, including Split Screen mode that allows you to divide the screen in two, in order to use two apps at the same time.
Further features includes Google’s Play Music app, 4G for sharing posts quicker and for watching videos with almost no lag time. There is also a handy notification light for visually notifying you of incoming messages, missed calls or calendar events.
Camera & Video
The Vodafone Smart E8 has a 5MP camera with a flash. You will get a good photograph with this camera and the HDR feature helps by taking two photos in quick succession and then merging the best details from each into one final image.

Further shooting modes includes Time-lapse video, Multi exposure and Manual shooting modes. In Manual mode you can adjust the ISO, white balance and overall exposure. You can also apply effects in the viewfinder or shoot video at a quality of 720p (HD).
The selfie camera has a 2MP resolution but no flash, other than the light that the screen emits. Because of this, you may want to take selfies next to other light sources, in order to get better results.
The 2,200mAh battery isn’t huge but it doesn’t need to be in order to give good usage times on the Vodafone Smart E8. This is because the screen has a relatively low resolution and the processor is pretty small.
You can make the most of the power reserves by checking out the Power Manager feature. Here you can check which apps have been using the battery and choose a power saving mode based on how long it will be before you can recharge the phone.
