Sony Xperia E5 black
The ‘It just works’ experience
Design - Simplistic beauty
The Sony Xperia E5 is one of Sony’s best looking phones to date and the simplistic beauty of the matte finish and symmetry, that it is given life through equally sized top and bottom bezels, gives this Sony phone a premium look.
Update: Sony announces Xperia XZ
In the hand, the polycarbonate casing feels solid and the softly rounded corners are pleasant to both eye and hand. The body is 8.2mm thick and weighs 147g, which is pretty standard for mid-range phones.
The Sony Xperia E5, in either Graphite Black or White, has a 5” HD display (720 x 1280 pixels). The Sony user interface is a little more colourful than those we have seen in the past and this phone supports themes, for those who want to personalise further.
In the dark, the screen can be dimmed down to 4 nits (1 nit is equivalent to the light of 1 candle), while under sunlight the screen can be boosted up to 508 nits, bringing perfect visibility and little eye-strain, whether used indoors or out.

Phone Set Up
Getting started - Introduction to Xperia
Phone manufacturers want to make it as easy as possible for you to move to their brand and Sony is no exception. The ‘Introduction to Xperia’ widget allows the user to set up the Xperia E5 in just minutes. The feature seamlessly migrates content from previous devices and syncs any accounts used before, such as email, social networking and Chrome bookmarks.
The 16GB internal memory, of which 10GB is available to the user, will allow for initial app downloads and photo storing. To go beyond this, the 200GB microSD card slot can be used to boost the memory significantly.

If you have the money, and the inclination to do so, then you can compliment the Sony Xperia E5 with a range of premium Sony accessories, such as the BSP10 Bluetooth Speaker, STH30 Stereo Headset or SBH54 Stereo Bluetooth Headset.
For those who do not, ClearAudio+ works with the loud speaker to give a peak audio/music output of about 75 dB.
Beyond aesthetics - It just works
The big draw of this smartphone is that the ‘It just works’ experience means that the Sony Xperia E5 has the hardware to perform well and it isn’t full of bloatware, which essentially ruins the performance.
The quad-core processor with 1.5GB RAM performs well out-of-the-box, but the key to future performance is provided through the ‘Smart Cleaner’ and ‘Xperia Tips’ features.
- Smart Cleaner - This feature ensures performance remains smooth and consistent, by clearing the cache data and by removing unused processes.
- Xperia Tips - These are generated and based upon how you interact with the phone. This lets you get the most out of it, with things such as uninstall unused apps reminders, which ultimately saves data and improves performance.
User Interface - Marshmallow and Sony apps
Google’s Android Marshmallow operating system works with 4G, Wi-Fi and GPS to deliver services such as web browsing with Chrome, navigation with Google Maps and Voice Search and reminders with the Google Assistant.
Outside of Marshmallow, Sony has pre-loaded a selection of useful apps, which includes the Music, Album, Video & TV, Movie Creator, Track ID, What’s New, Weather, Spotify and News Suite apps.
Camera & Video
Photography - Made simple
The Sony Xperia E5 has a pair of really good cameras, with a 13MP main camera and 5MP selfie camera. The camera interface has really been cleaned up and swiping up or down on the screen switches between Auto, Manual and Video shooting modes.

Auto Scene Recognition works with both cameras, so it can tell the difference between taking a selfie and taking a picture of your cuisine in a restaurant. Auto Scene Recognition then automatically adapts the settings to ensure that the best result possible is captured.
HDR and a 3x Clear Image Zoom are also present and to give real practical usability, there is a new sharing shortcut, that allows for instantaneous photo uploads to Instagram, Facebook and Twitter.
Power - Two day’s power
The 2,300mAh battery performs well and the typical user should expect to get up to two day’s use. As is normal with Sony phones, there is a choice of power saving modes, for when you know that recharging any time soon is not an option.
Final thoughts: The Sony Xperia E5 fits into a pricing that bracket that is at the upper end of the budget market and the lower end of the mid-range market. When the good performance is considered, it is likely that the Xperia E5 owners are going to be pleasantly surprised at just how good this phone is.
