Sony Xperia C5 Ultra review
The selfie phone with a 6” screen
The Sony Xperia C5 Ultra lives up to its name with a huge 6” screen that is paired with dual 13MP cameras to capture, create and display in the most vibrant way possible.
|✓ Amazing selfie camera||✗ Fairly heavy|
|✓ 95db music speaker||✗ Not pocket friendly|
✓ Long lasting battery
The build quality of the Sony Xperia C5 Ultra is headlined by an aluminium frame into which the 6” Full HD IPS display sits. There is an extremely thin bezel edging the screen that makes it almost border-less and this ingenuity means that the overall size of phone is the same as others with much smaller displays.
The display uses Sony’s BRAVIA TV technologies to create visuals that are breathtaking, with a resolution of 1080 x 1920 pixels. Super Vivid Mode can be activated to take things to the next level where colours are more vibrant than those seen in nature.
Keep up to Date
Fill in the form and be the first to know when the Sony Xperia C5 Ultra is released.
The Sony Xperia C5 Ultra is scratch resistant and has a slightly curved back in what is otherwise a fairly flat design. Traditional white and black colour variations exist while the soft mint variant adds a little character. This smartphone weighs in towards the upper limits at 187 grams, which is to be expected when its screen size is considered, yet its waist is fairly thin at 8.2mm thick.
There is plenty of power under the hood with an asynchronous 1.7GHz 64-bit octa-core processor that offers speed when needed while saving the battery when it isn’t. The memory consists of 2GB RAM, 16GB internal memory of which 9.5GB can be used by the user and for heavy users, a microSD card slot exists for cards of up to 200GB.
Phone Set Up
The set up process is fairly simple with the Android Lollipop v5.0 operating system permitting the use of app folders, widgets and a variety of unlocking methods. Apps can be downloaded from Google Play and multiple user profiles can be created if needed.
Sony is well known for its musical mastership and the Sony Xperia C5 Ultra puts this on full display. The list of Sony sound enhancements are extensive, including ClearAudio+, xloud, Clear Bass, Clear Stereo, Clear Phase and Sony 3D Surround Sound (VPT), which creates sounds through headphones that appear to come from outside of their physical presence.
TrackID music recognition is also featured along with a manual equaliser. The most impressive statistic is possibly the maximum output of 95db.
As the Sony Xperia C5 Ultra is an oversized device, careful considerations have been made to ensure that certain demographics are not alienated. One-handed mode will be welcomed and well-used by these with a simple diagonal slide of a finger activating a screen that is shrunk to 4”.
The remaining feature set includes services from Google such as the Chrome for Android web browser that is connected using 4G or Wi-Fi. Google Maps with Street View is included along with the ability to create a Wi-Fi hotspot and mirroring of the display on a TV screen.
Camera & Video
The sound characteristics of the Sony Xperia C5 Ultra may be impressive but the photography is on a new level all together. With front and back facing 13MP cameras this Sony smartphone caters to the selfie equally as well as the landscape scenery.
The main 13MP has a 25mm wide-angle lens that provides a field of view of 88 degrees. It is paired up with a soft LED flash, Auto Scene Recognition, 4x digital zoom, red-eye reduction and Full HD video recording.
The selfie camera has all of the above but with a few unique tweaks. The 22mm lens is paired up this time with a special square-shaped Selfie Flash that lights up more of the picture with extensive and uniform light. The frame is filled equally with light and the level of flash is self adjusting as it senses the surrounding light conditions.
The PROselfie feature set includes HDR to ensure that selfies are perfectly balanced and detailed even when they are backlit by the sun. The suite of selfie features also include:
- Style portrait to enhance your look and add fun effects in real time
- AR mask for placing faces over yours or by activating both cameras faces can be fused at varying levels
- Face in captures your reaction at the same time as a picture is taken on the main camera.
- Smile Shutter for capturing your pose at the perfect moment
The 2,930mAh battery delivers two day battery life under typical usage scenarios. The ‘up to’ limits of the battery includes talk time of 14 hours, standby of 769 hours, music playback for 60 hours and video playback of almost 8 hours. Further longevity can be gained through activating Battery STAMINA Mode or Ultra STAMINA Mode, which selectively limit services in favour of power conservation.
