Sony Xperia 1 review
Our Sony Xperia 1 review introduces a premium phone that tops the charts for hardware at every corner. Scheduled for a late spring release, the Xperia X1 won’t be cheap at from £849 but that’s still cheaper than the Apple iPhone XS.
World’s first CinemaWide display – a cinema in your pocket
The Sony Xperia 1 has the world’s first 6.5” CinemaWide 21:9 4K HDR OLED display. This gives the phone a long yet slim appearance because it adopts the aspect ratio of a cinema screen.
Keep up to Date
Fill in the form and be the first to know when the Sony Xperia 1 is released.
>The special Creator Mode is powered by CineAlta technologies and works to provide exacting colour accuracy. You can stream 21:9 content on Netflix and if it isn’t 4K quality or HDR then the phone will upscale media as it is streamed.
The 4K display has a resolution 3,840x 1,644 pixels, which equates to a mind-blowing 643 pixels per inch. The extremely long display is perfect for multitasking, and in fact, this is multi-tasking at its very best.
Durability – tougher than the rest
The Sony Xperia 1 is a strong and durable smartphone that incorporates a metal frame with a Corning Gorilla Glass 6 front and back. You might see other mobile phone manufacturers touting that they have Gorilla Glass, but it is usually an older version that is nothing like as durable as Corning’s 6th generation of glass.

The phone is pretty slim at 8.2mm thick and it is certified as IP68, indicating resistance to water and dust. You can choose the colour that you like from four options; black, Purple, White, and Grey.
Processor – working harder on less powerful
The Xperia 1 has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 octa-core 2.84GHz processor with 6GB RAM. This gives a 25% boost in performance and a 40% boost to graphics. It does this while still being more efficient than its predecessors.
Phone Set Up
Security – a change in direction
Sony changes the position of its fingerprint reader on this new phone. It is no longer integrated into the power button, so it is a fingerprint sensor only and it has been positioned between the volume keys and the power button.
Ample memory – bring you content over
You can bring your content and apps over to the Sony Xperia 1, which has a large 128GB memory. If you need extra memory down the line, then there is an up to 512GB microSD card slot.
Sound and gaming – truly immersive
The Sony Xperia 1 sounds superb with Dolby Atmos. Dolby Atmos creates a multi-dimensional sound that surrounds you from all sides and from above. The stereo speaker creates high-resolution audio, so music files and games sound great. If you have a Bluetooth 5.0 headset then you can enjoy music at far greater distances from your phone.
A Game Enhancer (Snapdragon Elite Gaming) works hard to boost performance and block notifications. You can record your gaming sessions and share them with other gamers. This phone also supports PS4 Remote Play.
OS and UI – Android Pie gets refined
The Sony Xperia 1 runs on Google’s Android 9 Pie and this is refined by Sony’s user interface. In particular, Side Sense uses artificial intelligence (AI) to show you apps based upon when they were last used, the time, and your location.
Camera & Video
Record Cinema Pro – video recording at a pro level
The cameras on the Sony Xperia 1 take video recording to new heights. The Record Cinema Pro feature is powered by CineAlta and lets you record with LOOK colour settings. With these, you can choose the feel and look of each scene with eight different colour settings, just like a movie producer could.

Triple camera – shoot super-wide or zoom up close
The Sony Xperia 1 has a triple 12MP lens camera, and the three different sized lenses let you shoot at any range. The 16mm lens is for super-wide 135-degrees landscapes, while the 26mm and 52mm lens give you 2x optical zoom.
Further camera features include:
- 5x digital zoom
- Bokeh effect – blur the background
- 3D Creator
- Eye AF – tracks the subject's eyes to keep subjects in focus
- Fast focus - from Sony’s Alpha range of cameras
- RAW noise reduction – cleans up low light photos before they are saved as a jpeg
- Super Slow Motion – record at 960fps
- Portrait Selfie Effects – take 8MP portrait photos
Smart Stamina – getting you through the day, every day
The Xperia 1 has a 3,330mAh capacity battery and Smart Stamina. Smart Stamina predicts your usage and makes adjustments to energy saving settings through the day, to ensure you always make it home.
The life of the battery is extended through Battery Care and Adaptive Charging. This will ensure that the battery retains more of its capacity over the coming months and years of use.
