Samsung Galaxy S9+ review
A reinvention of the smartphone camera
The Samsung Galaxy S9+ has a bigger display and battery, compared to the S9 (read the Galaxy S9 review here), as well as a dual camera and performance enhancing RAM.
6.2” Infinity Display
The Samsung Galaxy S9+ has one of the largest screens you will find on any smartphone. The 6.2” Super AMOLED Infinity Display is near bezel-less, making it far easier to hold.

The Quad HD+ resolution (2960 x 1440 pixels) also improves the experience with extra rows of pixels letting you see further down a webpage or app, without scrolling.
More RAM = faster performance
The 2.7GHz octa-core processor is paired up with 6GB RAM. This gives a lag-free experience, no matter how challenging the task or how graphics intensive your games may be.
Design and durability
The Samsung Galaxy S9+ is 8.5mm thick and weighs in a little heavier than the standard Galaxy S9, at189g. You can buy the Galaxy S9+ in either Midnight Black, Coral Blue, Lilac Purple or Titanium Grey.
Built to last, this Samsung mobile phone is IP68 certified for dust and water resistance.
Phone Set Up
Security is improved and made more convenient on the Galaxy S9+. Intelligent Scan now makes facial recognition and the iris scanner work together, at the same time. This is far more secure and also means that the phone can be unlocked with ease in low light.
If you prefer, you can instead use the fingerprint scanner and this is positioned underneath the camera lens, on the back of the phone. As expected, there is a Secure Folder that can be locked and unlocked by any of these security methods.
Transferring your old content
There is plenty of internal memory (64GB) for transferring over any content you have on an old smartphone. There is a memory card slot (cards up to 400GB) should you need to expand the memory in the future.
Samsung apps and Android Oreo
Samsung always gives plenty in terms of homemade apps and features. On the Galaxy S9+ you get:
- Bixby - A dedicated key activates the digital assistant
- Always On Display - See if you have notifications, check the time, pin images or memos onto it and choose different Face Widgets and Themes
- Security - Virus and malware protection is included
- Wallpaper - Use a 15 second Video Wallpaper
- Edge Screen - Swipe in to get quick access to your tasks, apps, reminders, contacts and a weather report
In addition to these, there are apps from Google, which come pre-loaded as part of the Android 8.0 Oreo operating system.
Three dimensional sound by AKG
The Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus has Dolby Atmos stereo surround sound speakers. These have been tuned by AKG and are more powerful (1.4x) than the speakers on the last Galaxy phone.
In the box, you will find a pair of earphones, once again tuned by AKG.
Camera & Video
Dual camera & dual aperture
The main advantage of the Galaxy S9+ over the Galaxy S9, is the dual camera that permits 2x optical zoom. You also get 10x digital zoom and live focus for blurring the background. In addition to this, there are bokeh filters that can do clever things, such as changing the shape of lights in the blurred background.

The 12MP camera has been designed to work better in very low light and bright daylight. This has been achieved by using a dual aperture lens. This is the first time we have seen this in a smartphone and the aperture can open a little or lot, to let in a little light (when it is too bright) or let in a lot of light (when it is too dark).
These two aperture modes are called Dark F1.5 Mode and Daylight F2.4 Mode.
AR Emoji is a lot a fun. The feature uses the 8MP selfie camera to take a picture of you and then convert this into an animated likeness. You can use these to be more emotive during chat.
Super slow-mo allows the Samsung Galaxy S9+ to capture a short burst of action (at 960fps) and play it back extremely slowly. The results can be used to create a looping GIF with forward, swing or reverse playback.
If you find it hard to capture the moment that you want, then you can turn on Motion Detection and the phone will do the hard work for you.
The camera on the Samsung Galaxy S9+ has many more features. Some of these include:
- Wide selfie
- Live Translation
- 4K video recording with playback zoom
The Samsung Galaxy S9+ has a bigger battery that not only copes with the larger display, but also extends usage times in comparison to the Galaxy S9.
The Galaxy S9+ will allow you to enjoy up to 94 hours of music playback (AOD off) or up to 18 hour of audio playback or up to 15 hours of internet browsing, from a single charge.
You can also fast charge the battery and if you wish, you can buy a wireless charger.
