Samsung Galaxy A8 (2018) review
Infinity Display & dual selfie camera
Our Samsung Galaxy A8 (2018) review finds two things that will really appeal to your average user. These are the expansive Infinity Display and a dual selfie camera that puts bokeh blurred background effects where you most want them, when taking portrait photos.
The pricing for the Galaxy A8 will be just below that of the Samsung Galaxy S8, bringing with it many of the premium features that were showcased on that device. /
Getting a futuristic look, the Samsung Galaxy A8 has an expansive 5.6” Super AMOLED Infinity Display. This gives a wider (landscape) or taller (portrait) cinematic experience with a 18.5:9 screen aspect ratio.
Keep up to Date
Fill in the form and be the first to know when the Samsung Galaxy A8 (2018) is released.
The wide horizontal view gets FHD+ resolution. This gives the standard 1080 pixels high but an expanded 2220 pixels wide. This is an important point to know because it means that you can see more of webpages, games and videos. This all equates to a very impressive 440 pixels per inch.
The Infinity Display also boasts an Always On feature. The Always On Display can show you the time, date, battery level and notifications.
Aluminium meets glass
The Samsung Galaxy A8 (2018) has smooth curves and an aluminium frame that sits between the front and back glass. The glass has a very smooth and glossy feel while the aluminium gives rigidity and strength.
The phone is IP68 water and dust resistant, measures 8.4mm thick and weighs in at 172g. The colour options include Black, Orchid Grey, Blue and Gold.
The Galaxy A8 has a Samsung designed and manufactured (Exynos) octa-core 2.2GHz processor. This has 4GB RAM, which gives the necessary speed for supreme gaming and multitasking.
Phone Set Up
The Samsung Galaxy A8 puts Face Recognition at a more affordable price and this is backed up with a Fingerprint Scanner. The fingerprint scanner is conveniently located below the camera lens on the back of the phone.

During set up, your fingerprint is scanned numerous times and this has resulted in fast unlocking, even when your finger is placed on the sensor at an odd angle. Your fingerprint can unlock the phone and give you access to a Secure Folder where apps, movies, photos and private files can be kept safe and away from prying eyes.
As always, the highest levels of security can be gained by using a PIN, password or pattern. Regardless of the locking method you choose, you get the peace of mind of Knox real-time protection with virus and malware prevention powered by McAfee.
The Galaxy A8 has a 32GB internal memory and a microSD card slot that will accommodate memory cards with a value of up to 256GB.
Bixby and Samsung Experience 8.5
The Samsung Galaxy A8 (2018) gets the Samsung Experience 8.5 custom overlay, along with the Bixby assistant. Bixby can set Bixby Reminders, get info through your camera with Bixby Vision, or via text and touch.
Comparison: Samsung Experience 8.5 is also featured on the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 and the Samsung Galaxy S8.

The experience is based on Android 7.1.1 Nougat and you get to enjoy handy features like a Dual Messenger. With this you can have two accounts open at the same time, which is very handy for those who have work and personal accounts.
Ultra High Quality Audio Playback is offered through a speaker, positioned on the top right, just above the power button. This is an ideal place for the speaker to be positioned because sound isn’t muffled when the phone is placed face-up or face-down on a surface.
Samsung Experience 8.5 also gives you Adaptive Wi-Fi. This remembers where you have connected before and automatically connects you when in range. It then shuts off Wi-Fi when you leave the service range, helping you save battery power.
Camera & Video
Dual Front (selfie) Camera
It is great to see Samsung putting more focus on the selfie camera, so the Galaxy A8 really is or selfie addicts. The Dual Front Camera has a 16MP lens and a 8MP lens.
These two lenses give you Live Focus mode, which allows you to blur backgrounds, using a slider, for different levels of bokeh. You can even adjust the blur post shot.
Further features that will please selfie addicts includes a pre-shot Beauty effect, Wide Selfie feature and face-recognition technology that makes it east for you to decorate your selfies with Live Stickers.
The Beauty effect can be used while shooting video through the front camera. It accompanies other shooting tools such as HDR, Quick Launch, Grid Line, Voice Control, Location Tags and a floating camera button.
16MP rear camera
The Galaxy A8 has a 16MP rear camera with improved low light performance, delivered through a bright F1.7 lens, larger sensor and bigger pixels. Shooting modes include Food mode, Pro, Panorama and Hyperlapse.
Fast charging battery
The 3,000mAh battery can be fast charged, which is really handy for those who are always out and about.
The battery can give up to 66 hours of music playback with the AOD off or up to 44 hours of music playback with the AOD on. Alternatively, the battery can give up to 24 hours of talk time or up to 17 hours of video playback or up to 15 hours of internet use.
