Moto G5S review
Premium and durable design
The Moto G5S makes use of premium materials and these really give a classy look and feel. The diamond cut all-metal polished unibody is made from one piece of high-grade aluminium. This gives a nice shine to the edges, which catch and reflect light at different angles.
Keep up to Date
Fill in the form and be the first to know when the Moto G5S is released.
The body is coloured in your choice of either Fine Gold or Lunar Grey. The front glass is Corning Gorilla Glass 3 and this resists scratches and knocks. The whole phone has a water repellent nano-coating, so its safe to use in the rain and can take the occasional spill.

This Moto phone is light at 157g and is fairly slim at 8.2mm. The camera bumps sticks out a little further (1.3mm) but we really don’t mind this, as it is one of the unique characteristic of all Moto phones.
Display and processor performance
The Moto G5S has a display that today sits at the smaller end of the market. The 5.2” Full HD display has a fantastic resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels, which breaks down to 424 pixels per inch. We really couldn’t ask for more here.
The Qualcomm Snapdragon 1.4GHz octa-core processor with 3GB RAM performs well. There is minimal lag when you open apps, play games or browse the internet.
Phone Set Up
The first thing you may want to do when you get the Moto G5S is to set up the fingerprint reader. When you do this, you will never need to worry about remembering passwords or a PIN again.
The fingerprint reader can be used to make mobile payments in supporting retailers and online in the Play Store. You can also activate one-button nav in the settings and get rid of onscreen buttons altogether. When you do this the following fingerprint gestures can be used:
- Tap - Go to the home screen
- Swipe left - Go back
- Swipe right - View your recent apps
- Double swipe right - Flick between two apps
- Long press - Lock the phone
- Extra long press - Open the Google Assistant
- Transferring old smartphone content
If you have old smartphone content that you want to keep, then you can move this onto the 32GB internal memory. The Moto G5S also has a microSD card slot (accepts cards of up to128GB) for expanding the memory in the future.
Android OS and Moto experience
The Moto G5S runs on Google’s Android 7.1 Nougat operating system. This includes apps such as:
- Chrome (web browser)
- Play Store (download apps)
- Duo (video calling)
- Play Music
- Play Games
The Moto G5S gets a few tweaks from Motorola. These include:
- Moto Actions - These are shortcuts such as twisting your wrist to turn on the camera, picking the phone up to silence incoming calls and swiping the screen to shrink it for one-handed use.
- Moto Display - See notifications at a glance and decide on the amount of information to displayed.
- Screen pinning - Pin items such as boarding passes and tickets to the home screen.
You will also get to enjoy music that is projected out of the bottom ported loud speaker.
