LG K8 2017 review
Affordable 13MP camera phone
In our LG K8 2017 review we take a look at the 13MP camera, which is the standout feature, along with a host of pre-loaded LG apps. The LG K8 2017 is priced at from £10.49 per month on a 24 month contract.
Design and performance
The LG K8 2017 has an all-glass front that is made from 2.5D Arc Glass. This gives the 5” HD (720 x 1280 pixels) display rounded edges, giving a much smoother feel when swiping in or swiping out.
- Alternatives - If you want a larger display then you should opt for the LG K10 2017, while if you want a really cheap phone then you should choose the LG K4 2017.

The design sees a mono speaker positioned on the back and it is nice to find a stereo headset in the box. Underneath the camera module is button that looks like a fingerprint scanner, although it isn’t. Instead, this button works as a power/lock key.
The LG K8 2017 has a thickness of 8.1mm, which is neither the fattest or thinnest around. However, weighing in at 142g, this LG phone is one of the lightest smartphones.
The performance is driven by a 1.4GHz quad-core processor with 1.5GB RAM. This gives a small amount of lag when opening apps or playing more graphics intensive games, but this is quite acceptable when we consider the phone’s price tag.
Phone Set Up
The first thing you may wish to do is to move content over from an old smartphone or iPhone. For this, there is a 16GB internal memory and while this is far from huge, there is a memory card slot that will accept up to 32GB microSD cards.
The LG K8 2017 is pretty flexible when it comes to personalisation. For starters, you can edit the home touch buttons, of which you can set a maximum of five. The options includes adding a button for accessing the notification panel or Capture+.

You can edit the notification panel itself with the option to rearrange, add or remove icons. Within the menu, you will find the option to turn on Shortcut Keys. These work when the screen is off, with a double press on the volume down key launching the camera app or with a double press on the volume up key launching Capture+.
You can resize the keyboard height, split the keyboard in two or move the whole keyboard to one side, for one-handed operation. In the evening you can reduce eyestrain by turning on Comfort View, which reduces the amount of blue light that is emitted by the display.
As we have previously mentioned, there is no fingerprint reader for security. Instead you can lock the screen with a pattern, PIN, password or Knock Code. The Knock Code lets you set a pattern of screen knocks and have the advantage are working when the screen is off.
The LG K8 2017 runs on Google’s Android 7.0 Nougat operating system. This gives you a series of pre-loaded apps such as Chrome, Docs, Drive, Gmail, Duo, Maps, Sheets, Slides and YouTube.
There are a few other essential apps included, like Evernote, Facebook and Instagram. New apps can be downloaded through Google’s Play Store.
LG has added a few apps of its own design and you can access SmartWorld for more LG themes, fonts, apps, games and audio content.
Pre-loaded LG apps:
- KnockON - This feature is pretty handy with a double tap on the screen turning it on Capture+ - Capture screenshots, with the option to write notes over them
- QuickMemo+ - An advanced notepad that lets you take notes on top of photos or screenshots
- LG Music app - For creating and playing playlists
Many of the apps support multi-window multi-tasking. To enter multi-window mode simply press and hold the square shaped home touch button and select the apps that you want to use in this split screen mode.
The multi-window feature works particularly well when you want to watch a YouTube video on one half of the screen, while you scroll through your social network feed on the other.
Camera & Video
Even affordable phones have very good cameras these days and this is the case with the LG K8 2017. The 13MP camera has a F2.2 lens with a large 1/3” sensor. The camera is fully featured with HDR, Burst Shot and Interval Shot, where four photos are taken at intervals of two seconds.

The 5MP selfie camera focuses on ease of use. The options for activating the shutter includes Auto Shot where you simply steady the phone for a second, Cheese Shutter (voice command) and Gesture Shot.
When you record a video you can use Quick Share to instantly upload it to any messaging or social media app.
