Phone Set Up
The Huawei Y9 (2019) is on offer with either 64GB onboard memory and 4GB RAM or 128GB onboard memory with 6GB RAM. The standard model with 4GB will be suitable for the majority of users but if you want to try out AR games and other demanding tasks then the higher RAM will be the way to go.
64GB is a decent enough size memory to allow you to transfer all of your existing contacts, images and other files. If you find you need more space you can add further memory via a microSD card of up to 400GB.
The Y9 (2019) has the usual fingerprint sensor placed on the back. This is placed where you would naturally place your finger when picking up the phone. It’s a responsive sensor and will wake the phone quickly.
Android and EMUI 8.2
The Huawei Y9 (2019) is an Android device so you get lots of essential apps and those you will be familiar with. Google Assistant is on board as well as Chrome, YouTube and a choice of apps for download from Google Play.
Huawei has enhanced the user experience with their EMUI 8.2 system. This gives you plenty of choices when it comes to themes and playing with the interface options. One of the things that this user interface has been optimised for is AI technology. The Kirin 7 octa-core processor is optimised for maximum efficiency and delivers the following improvements compared to the previous chip:
- 30% less power consumption
- 2x GPU efficiency
- 1.3x GPU performance increase
This all translates to amazing AI gaming and responsive performance when running multiple tasks.

AI conversation and Histen5.0 sound
The phone includes Talkeasy AI conversation which can interpret the environment, and sound intrusions, around you and helps keep conversation clear. Automotive Enhancement and NICAM technology optimised the volume to surrounding noise levels and uses adaptive sound.
Music fans will love the Histen5.0 sound feature. This simulates surround sound and enhances bass for immersive sound through headphones. You can also share your music out loud and across multiple devices using Party Mode.
Eye Comfort Mode
With more of us spending so much time on our devices, manufacturers have been working to make screens more comfortable to use. The Huawei Y9 (2019) has Eye Comfort Mode that is certified by TUV Rheinland. This professional body certifies the quality of mobile phone displays for eye protection.
The Y9 screen will filter out blue frequencies which can be harsh on the eyes. It will also reduce blue light damage and adjust the screen settings in low light.

New: Honor Magic 2 review
The camera technology has been developed using AI so that it can recognise up to 500 scene types. Settings are then subtly adjusted to suit whatever you are capturing to make sure you always get a great shot.
Some of the things the AI recognition can recognise include:
- Blue Sky
- Ancient Building
- Stage Performance
The front-facing camera has a f/2.0 aperture and uses 3D lighting effects for professional looking self-portraits. You can choose from different lighting options such as stage lighting, butterfly lighting and soft lighting. The beauty algorithm will adjust the image to make you look your best every time.
One thing that this smartphone is great for is night shots. The rear camera allows up to 50% more light in. AI stabilisation will keep the shot still while the 6 -second long exposure captures detail while reducing noise.
