Huawei P30 review
Leica triple camera
Our Huawei P30 review finds a camera-focused smartphone that delivers outstanding results in both landscape or portrait photography. Huawei has partnered with Leica once again, so photographic artistry is the big draw for consumers.
Huawei Dewdrop display
The Huawei P30 houses a really fantastic 6.1” OLED Huawei Dewdrop display. The small camera notch doesn’t distract from the visual elegance that you are presented with, and the FHD+ resolution (2,340x 1,080 pixels) shows all the detail that you could desire. There is also an Eye Comfort Mode for those who use their phone late into the evening.

The phone is encased in dual-curved glass and you can choose between a colour-range of solid colours or gradient colours. The options to choose from include Amber Sunrise, Breathing Crystal, Pearl White, Aurora, and Black.
The phone is light and slim in comparison to its competitors at 165g and 7.57mm. We don’t get full water resistance but IP53 certification confirms that the phone is splash resistant.
World’s first smartphone 7nm chip
The Huawei P30 uses the Huawei-made Kirin 980 7nm octa-core 2.6GHz processor with up to 8GB RAM. This processor delivers higher performance and lowers power consumption. High-end gaming is well catered for with the GPU Turbo 3.0 graphics chip and a SuperCool cooling system.
Phone Set Up
Faster in-screen fingerprint sensor
New technology arrives with the Huawei P30 and this makes unlocking the phone with a fingerprint much faster. In addition to the in-screen fingerprint sensor, you can set up Face Unlock and enjoy the convenience of Pick to Wake. You can use your fingerprint to secure a PrivateSpace, which is ideal for phones used by multiple users or used for both work and personal purposes.
You can bring your content over from your old phone or a computer using Huawei Share or Huawei Phone Clone. There is a healthy 128GB memory and there is a memory card slot for future memory expansion.
Android 9 Pie meets EMUI 9.1
The Huawei P30 actually brings with it a decent set of features that set it apart from other Android phones. Most of these come as part of Huawei’s EMUI 9.1 user interface.
On the performance side of things, EMUI 9.1 optimises many underlying processes with AI prediction technology, for an improvement in system response speed. This version of EMUI also delivers a 10% reduction in power consumption.

The first set of features come under the HiVision moniker:
- Scan food – use the camera to get weight, calories, and nutritional facts
- Shop – scan things that you see to get purchase recommendations
- Scan codes – get information from QR codes
- Identify objects – find information on paintings, road signs, and landmarks
- Translate – use the camera to translate words or phrases
The Huawei P30 has a handy AR Measure app that lets you take a measurement for a DIY project or measure the height of a person, by scanning them from head-to-toe. You can leave your laptop behind when you go to work and enjoy PC-like functionality in Desktop Mode. There is also Dolby Atmos to boost sound quality and App Twin, just in case you have two social media accounts.
Camera & Video
Leica Triple Camera System
The Huawei P30 is a true gem in the realm of smartphone photography and it arrives with a Leica Triple Camera System. The camera has three lenses so that you can shoot from macro to super-wide landscapes.
The three lenses of the Huawei P30:
- 40MP Super Sensing Camera
- 16MP Ultra Wide Angle Lens
- 8MP Telephoto Lens
With these lenses, you get the very best quality when it comes to zooming. The camera offers up 3x optical zoom, 5x hybrid zoom, and 30x digital zoom. The Huawei SuperSpectrum sensor is a new piece of tech and this captures 40% more light, making day shots more vibrant and extreme low-light shots clear and detailed.

- Light Painting
- Super Macro
- Super Night Scene
- Moving Pictures
- Slow Motion Playback

The ultimate selfie camera
This title is well-deserved with a 32MP lens. This will capture every eyelash and pimple, so it’s a good job that you can activate a Beauty Effect in Portrait Mode to hide the things that you don’t want others to see.
The selfie camera once again is supreme in all lighting conditions from night parties to bright daylight shots with overexposed backlight. Of course, you can make your selfies stand out with a background blur effect.
Say goodbye to overnight charging.
The high capacity 3,650mAh battery gives superb usage times. With TUV Safety Certified Huawei SuperCharge, the 22.5W charger tops up the battery so quickly, that you don’t need to charge your phone overnight anymore.
Although a wireless charger isn’t included on the box, the Huawei P30 does support fast wireless charging.
