Huawei P20 Pro review
Our Huawei P20 Pro review confirms that this phone is the one to buy if you want the very best photography experience on a smartphone. Photos are generated using a triple camera and built-in AI ensures they look perfect.
The Huawei P20 Pro fills the front of the phone with screen and just like the iPhone X, there is a notch removed for the camera. However, Huawei’s notch is much smaller and if you prefer, you can turn the notch look off by having a black bar appear across the top, making it invisible to see.

The 6.1” FullView Display uses OLED screen technology, which gives it excellent colour vibrancy. The display has FHD resolution (2240 x 1080 pixels) and an Always Display feature that shows the time, date, battery and notifications, without having to activate the display.
Gradient paint job
The Huawei P20 Pro has two special colour variants and these subtly change colour from one edge to the other. This is exclusive to the Pink Gold and Twilight models, while Black and Midnight Blue are purely just that.
There is a nice form created using curved and toughened 3D glass panels, which are fixed onto a metallic frame. Unlike the Huawei P20, the Huawei P20 Pro is IP67 certified, so a splash or rain shower will not cause any damage.
The body is pretty slim at 7.8mm thick and at 180g, it is heavier than some smaller phones but pleasantly lighter than some of its direct ‘flagship’ competition.
AI driven performance
The Huawei P20 Pro has a Huawei designed Kirin 970 AI octa-core 2.36GHz processor with 6GB RAM. This is extremely fast and designed to handle Augmented Reality apps and AI assisted photography, but more on that in the camera section of this review.
Phone Set Up
Fingerprint security and navigation
The Huawei P20 Pro has an edge-less fingerprint sensor and this can be used to unlock the phone and perform Smart Navigation.
Smart Navigation: Swipe over the fingerprint sensor to perform home, recent apps and back actions. This frees up screen space but you can activate the virtual buttons again, if you wish.
If privacy is a concern, then the phone will let you put documents into a Safe or activate an App Lock. The Huawei P20 Pro goes a little further than most phones with a PrivateSpace where apps and other items can be completely hidden. The entry to this space is hidden so that nobody will even know that you have a private app on the phone. You can access the space with a different password or with a fingerprint from another one of your fingers.
If you need to bring content over from another phone, then there is a rather healthy 128GB internal memory.
Android 8.1 Oreo and EMUI 8.1
The Huawei P20 Pro is powered by Google’s Android Oreo operating system and Huawei has given this a new look with its EMUI user interface. There are many features and enhancements surrounding AI.
If you are a businessperson, you can use the phone to create a desktop experience by connecting it to an external display (you will need a cable for this). This runs just like a desktop so you really can leave your laptop behind.
The P20 Pro has the Dolby Atmos sound system and USB-C earphones, and an adapter in case you want to use standard 3.5mm headphones, are included in the box. You can also enjoy Hi-Res audio with Bluetooth devices that support HWA.
Camera & Video
Leica Triple Camera
The Huawei P20 Pro has a triple camera and DxOMark has ranked the camera number one for both photos and videos. You simply cannot find better.

The three lenses include a 40MP RGB lens, a 20MP monochrome lens and a 8MP telephoto lens.
The wide aperture lens and a new sensor creates exceptional low light results. AI Image Stabilisation lets get excellent result in Night Mode without the need for a tripod. Artificial lighting usually play havoc with your photography results but they don’t on the Huawei P20 Pro.
