Huawei P20 lite review
Get that FullView experience at a more affordable price
Our Huawei P20 lite review finds a phone that for many will bring a perfect blend of innovative features, like a FullView Display and a dual camera, together with a price tag that is more affordable to those given to the Huawei P20 and Huawei P20 Pro.
If you like the look of the Apple iPhone X but couldn’t afford one, then the Huawei P20 lite is going to be the right phone for you. There is a large 5.84” FullView Display that fills the front of the phone and there is a notch taken out for the camera. This notched area is however, smaller than that of its rival, so we have to give a big thumbs up to Huawei for this.

The Full HD+ high contrast display has a resolution of 2280 x 1080 pixels. This gives you more rows of pixels so that you can see more without scrolling. There is also an Eye Comfort Mode to ensure that you don’t tire your eyes in the evening.
Comparison: Full HD has a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels.
Metal and glass
The front and back on the Huawei P20 lite are made from hardened glass and these are fixed onto a metal chassis. We love this blend of materials and all of the sides, back and buttons are coloured in your choice of Klein Blue, Midnight Black, Platinum Gold or Sakura Pink.
New: Honor 9 lite review
This Huawei phone is slim at 7.4mm thick and is incredibly light, which is surprise for a phone with a big screen, at 145g.
The Huawei P20 lite has a Kirin 659 octa-core 2.36GHz processor with 4GB RAM. You may be used to hearing about Qualcomm Snapdragon processors and Kirin maybe new to you.
Kirin processors are made by Huawei and I have one in my phone. So, I can attest to their brilliant performance and lack of lag. You really will be delighted by the experience you get.
Phone Set Up
Fingerprint or Face Unlock
The Huawei P20 lite has a rear positioned fingerprint sensor and this actually makes the front look better, in my opinion, compared to the other phones in the P20 series. These have the fingerprint button under the display, so the look isn’t as clean as that on the P20 lite.
The fingerprint sensor can be used to store files or photos in the Safe or for protecting apps with App Lock. This is really useful if you have a child who might use the phone or if you have work apps on your phone.
If you want an alternative way to unlock the phone, then you can give Face Unlock a try.
The Huawei P20 lite has a generous 64GB memory and a microSD card slot that accepts cards with a value of up to 256GB. If your old phone was a Huawei phone, then you can transfer your data over even quicker with Huawei Share, which uses both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi.
Android 8.0 Oreo and EMUI 8.0
The Huawei P20 lite has Google’s Android Oreo operating system and this is enhanced with Huawei’s EMUI user interface. Together, you get pre-loaded Google apps, a one handed UI, Pocket Mode and App Twin. App Twin lets you have two accounts open at the same time for the following apps:
- QQ Messenger
If you intend to let other people use your phone then you can add user accounts with different permission levels. These include owner, user and guests.

Quick tip: When using the recent apps key, tap the lock icon on an individual app so that it stays open even when you use the bin icon to close all apps.
Camera & Video
The camera on the Huawei P20 lite is a gem and it comprises of a main 16MP lens and a secondary 2MP lens. Wide Aperture Mode makes use of the second lens to let you capture bokeh effects. You can highlight one person in a crowd, or another object such as a flower, and bring focus to it by blurring the background.
You can also use Wide Aperture Mode at night and both lenses are used to capture more light. Alternatively you can select Night Shot and this will take a number of photos at different exposures and merge them together, to bring out better colours and brightness.
Further shooting modes include:
- Food Mode
- Object Tracking
- Burst Shot
- Ultra Snapshot
- Slo-mo video recording
- Light Painting
16MP selfie camera
The Selfie camera on the Huawei P20 lite uses light fusion technology to capture clear and bright selfies under any light. Night Mode is automatically activated if the phone senses low light levels.
Feature of the selfie camera include:
- Portrait Mode - This beautifies everyone in the frame
- Perfect Selfie - You can set a custom beauty plan for you
- AR stickers - Use augmented reality stickers or create unique gestures with animated graphics for sharing
The 3,000mAh battery is paired up with SmartCharge and this offers fast charging that is coordinated, to ensure safety. The battery offers up to 471 hours of standby or up to 30 hours of talk time.
If you are away from a charger and need to save power, then you can use Power Saving Mode, Ultra Power Saving Mode and Smart Resolution. Smart Resolution may be new to you and it simply reduces the screen resolution to save power.
