Huawei Mate 20 Pro review
All we could dream off
Our UK Huawei Mate 20 Pro review will open your eyes to what a smartphone can really do. We are absolutely blown away by the combination of triple camera, 2K display, and on-screen fingerprint sensor.
You can buy the Huawei Mate 20 Pro right now on 24-month contracts from £39.50 per month or as handset-only from £899.
Forget Full HD, the Huawei Mate 20 Pro has a 6.39” 2K OLED display. This bright and vibrant display shows 3120×1440 pixels, which is a big improvement on a Full HD resolution of 1920×1080 pixels.
The front of this Huawei phone is covered in 3D glass, which curves over and onto the sides. Your colour choices are Midnight Blue, Emerald Green, Black and Twilight and the back of the phone is made from textured glass that is non-slip and anti-fingerprint.

The battle of the biometrics
There is another new way to secure and unlock your mobile phone. The Huawei Mate 20 Pro has an on-screen fingerprint sensor. This means that the design isn’t ruined by a fingerprint sensor on the back or beneath the screen.
You can instead choose to use 3D Face Unlock if you prefer. High-levels of security are offered via the 3D Depth Sensing Camera that projects and measures 30,000 points on your face.
Both methods are really cool so it’s down to you to decide which you will use.
NM memory card
The Huawei Mate 20 Pro comes with either 128GB or 256GB of internal memory. Huawei has invented a new type of memory card named an NM memory card. This nano-memory card is 45% smaller than a microSD card and gives you a memory boost of up to 256GB.
Android Pie and EMUI 9
The Huawei Mate 20 Pro gets Google’s Android 9 operating system and Huawei’s EMUI 9.0 user interface. EMUI is designed to simplify and make sense of the user experience.

Camera & Video
Leica Triple Camera
The Huawei Mate 20 Pro has a triple camera that opens up new photography opportunities. The three lenses include:
- 40MP lens – This is the main RGB lens for everyday use
- 20MP lens – This is a Leica Ultra Wide Angle Lens for shooting landscapes and extreme close-up shots from 2.5cm away
- 8MP lens – This is a telephoto lens for distant shots
The camera automatically changes its settings with recognition of 25 categories and 1,500 scenarios. AI is at play with AI Image Stabilisation that works with Night Mode to let you shoot low light photos.
The out-of-this-world camera experience continues with AI Cinema Mode that lets you shoot video at the classic 21:9 movie ratio, with real-time HDR. Furthermore, the Director’s Cut AI Video Editor can identify faces and create highlight reels for each person in the video. You can also add background blur or filters to your videos.
The final camera features include a 24MP selfie camera and 3D Live Emojis.
AI Power Management
Not only do you get a huge 4,200mAh battery on the Huawei Mate 20 Pro but you also get AI power management to ensure you don’t run out of charge during the day. If you need to charge up in a hurry then you can gain 70% charge in 30 minutes, with the 40W fast charger.
If you wish to buy or already have a (Qi) wireless charger then this is supported. You can even use wireless reverse charging, should another wireless device run low on power.
