Huawei Mate 10 Pro review
World’s first Kirin AI processor
Our Huawei Mate 10 Pro review finds blazing fast performance, offered by the World’s first Kirin AI processor. The performance is matched with photographic excellence, having been ranked by DxOMark as the second best smartphone camera in the world, second only to the Google Pixel 2.
The Huawei Mate 10 Pro has really large 6” FullView OLED display. The visual spectacle is pretty amazing with an almost bezel-less design that sees a 18:9 aspect ratio showing off more of websites, without scrolling.
The screen resolution is 2160 x 1080 pixels and this breaks down to an impressive 402 pixels per inch. The display uses HDR 10 technology to deliver bright and vivid colours.
The Huawei Mate 10 Pro has a glass front and back. The toughened glass on the back has been heated to 700°C in order to create an ergonomic curve, which feels good in the hand.

The back has a brushed metal effect stripe that highlights the dual camera. There are three colour choices of Mocha Brown, Midnight Blue and Titanium Grey. This Huawei smartphone is IP67 water resistant, weighs 178g and is 7.9mm thick.
Kirin AI processor
The Kirin AI processor boosts efficiency, speed and responsiveness. It does this through its AI computing platform, that incorporates a dedicated Neural-Network Processing Unit (NPU).

The octa-core 2.36GHz processor is paired up with a 12-core GPU (Graphics Processor Unit), making the chip 50x more power efficient, while delivering 25x better performance. The AI aspect learns how you use the phone in order to predict and optimise its settings.
Phone Set Up
Transferring content, security and shortcuts
The Huawei Mate 10 Pro comes in two versions, having different levels of performance and internal memory. The first option is 4GB RAM with 64GB of internal memory, backed up by a microSD card slot.
The second option boosts performance with 6GB RAM and 128GB of internal memory. In both cases, the Phone Clone App is ready to make easy work of transferring content over from another Huawei, Android or Apple device.
The fingerprint sensor is located on the back of the phone and this can be used to unlock the phone, access your PrivateSpace or to lock apps. The fingerprint sensor can also be used to perform tasks such as answering calls or taking photos.
When you begin to set up your home screens it is worth noting that you can create shortcuts to useful features. An example would be to create a home screen icon for taking selfies, meaning that one touch will open the camera in selfie mode.
EMUI 8 and Android Oreo
The Huawei Mate 10 Pro is powered by Huawei’s EMUI 8.0 user interface and Google’s Android 8.0 Oreo operating system. These deliver all sorts of useful features:
- Stereo+ - Stereo sound is automatically turned on when the phone is tilted into a landscape orientation, for enjoying media.
- Pocket PC - The Mate 10 Pro can create a full desktop experience by connecting it to a monitor, keyboard and mouse.
- Translator - The pre-loaded Translator app can automatically translate voice, text, images and conversations. Translator uses AI powered acceleration, completing these tasks in more than 50 languages.
- Knuckle Gestures - Capture screenshots or draw a letter on the screen to open apps.
- App Twin - Create multiple versions of apps like Facebook, so that you can remain logged into numerous accounts.
AI technology comes into play with other features. The Mate 10 Pro can for example boost low volume calls and transforms noisy calls for clear high-quality conversations.
Camera & Video
Leica Dual Camera
The new Leica Dual Camera has received a score of 97 out of 100, by DxOMark, coming in just one point shy of the Google Pixel 2. The superb camera uses a 20MP monochrome lens and a 12MP RGB lens to capture amazing results.

Real-Time Recognition identifies objects in the scene and the type of scene, making automatic adjustments to the brightness, contrast, colour and exposure. For example, the camera can recognise a flower, a cat, food, the beach and even text.
The dual lens permits loss-less 2x Hybrid Zoom and the capturing of AI Powered Bokeh Effects with Wide Aperture Mode. In Wide Aperture Mode you can shift the focal point onto a specific subject, even when there is a crowd of people in the photo.
The Huawei Mate 10 Pro can also capture 4K quality video, 3D Panoramas and light trails in Light Painting Mode. The 8MP selfie camera has a Portrait Mode with Perfect Selfie beautification settings.
The 4,000mAh battery has a really good capacity and this is much higher than most other phones on the market. Even heavy users can get a full days use with the Mate 10 Pro, which uses Smart Power Management to learn the user’s behaviours, allocating resources so that it can minimise power waste.
When you do need to charge the phone, Huawei SuperCharge gives a full days use in 20 minutes. The really good news is that the SuperCharge charger is included in the box, along with other goodies like USB Type-C earphones and a flexible clear case.
