HTC Desire 626 review
Fashion phone with the full HTC experience
The HTC Desire 626 is a great looking fashion phone that has an excellent camera and all of HTC’s innovative apps. The package is great value with many of the features seen on the HTC One range of smartphones but without the premium price tag.
|✓Great value||✗Small battery|
|✓High resolution camera|
The HTC Desire 626 looks just about as good as any smartphone can, that isn’t made from metal. The dual tone design emphasises the thin form of just 8.19mm and the accent colour is used to highlight elements such as the camera lens and flash.
On the bottom we find the microUSB port and on the top we find the 3.5mm audio jack. The front of the Desire 626 has just two thin strips of visible body, which hold the speakers and selfie camera lens. The whole package weighs in at 135 grams, which is very light for its class.
The 5” HD 720p display gives plenty of resolution for game play, video streaming and browsing the web. The experience is powered by a 1.2Ghz quad-core processor with 2GB RAM and there is an internal memory of 16GB. If needed, the memory can be expanded upon with a microSDXC (Secure Digital eXtended Capacity) card with a value of up to 512GB.
Phone Set Up
There is plenty of self expression available on the HTC Desire 626 and the Themes App is the home of this. Any part of a photo or selfie can be turned into a theme and be accompanied by a personal choice of sounds, icons, fonts and colours.
The remainder of the set up process involves the Android KitKat OS, which allows for the placement of widgets, apps folders and new app downloads through Google Play.
The HTC Desire 626 is a living thing or it will at least convince you that is. The HTC Sense Home Screen adapts throughout the day depending upon where you are and what you do. In short, quick access to apps, shortcuts and folders appear and their selection is based upon whether you are at home, work or on the go.
Personalisation continues with HTC BlinkFeed. This features allows you to select news topics of interest for creating a feed of headlines. If time is short then articles can be saved and read at a later time. The feed also includes your social updates from the likes of Facebook.
Google Now gets proactive too and provides information on the weather, sports scores, traffic information for your commute and directions with travel time to appointments that have been placed in the calendar app.
Everything else that you might expect to see on a modern smartphone is present, including 4G internet, wireless Bluetooth and GPS with Google Maps.
Camera & Video
The HTC Desire 626 has a powerful 13MP camera that is loaded with features such as continuous shooting, HDR and Double Exposure; a feature that lets you superimpose one image on top of another.
The selfie camera is no let down either with a 5MP resolution and a shutter that can be activated by saying ‘cheese’, by making a smile or by tapping the screen to start a countdown.
Portraits can be touched up with various levels of Make-up and the HTC One Gallery pulls your photos from Flickr, Facebook, Google Drive and Dropbox and puts them all in one place. More of the action can be captured if desired by recording video at a quality of 1080p.
The HTC Desire 626 has a relatively small battery with a 2,000mAh capacity. This said, HTC has managed to use clever hardware choices and software enhancements to offer a smartphone that can provide up to 22 hours talk time or up to 811 hours standby.
One of those key power-saving pieces of software is Sleep Mode. This can be activated manually or if the phone is left idle for a certain period of time, the phone takes the initiative and switches to Sleep Mode by itself. This low power state turns off the screen and unnecessary functions while protecting against accidental key presses. This makes it the mode to switch to when the phone goes into a pocket or bag.
