Google Pixel 3 review
Photography and videography taken to new heights
The Google Pixel 3 can be picked up from £42 per month on a 24-month contract or for £739 handset only. The Google Pixel 3 is the sister model to the Google Pixel 3 XL, which you should choose if a larger screen and battery is a box you need to tick.
Why the notch in the display is so big
The Google Pixel 3 has a 5.5” FullScreen FHD+ flexible OLED display and there is a big notch at the top. The notch is fairly big because it holds two camera lenses and a set of dual front-firing stereo speakers. The big news here is that those speakers are 40% louder than those used on the Pixel 2.

An Always-on Display lets you see essential information at a glance, such at the time and notifications. Corning Gorilla Glass 5 has been used, adding great levels of durability and scratch resistance.
Top quality build materials and processor
The Google Pixel 3 comes in a choice of three strangely named colours; Not Pink, Just Black, or Clearly White. A feel of quality is offered through the use of an aluminium frame and a soft touch glass back, that reduces the visibility of fingerprints.
This Google phone is fairly slim at 7.9mm and is very light (148g) in comparison to other 2018 flagship phones. IP68 certification has also been achieved, denoting that the phone can be submerged in water, although we never recommend that you do this.
The Pixel 3 gets the high-quality Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 2.5GHz octa-core processor with 4GB RAM. Needless to say, AR, 3D gaming and just about anything else works like clockwork.
Phone Set Up
The Google Pixel 3 has a Pixel Imprint fingerprint sensor, located on the back, for security. The phone has a built-in Titan M security chip that protects your passwords and OS.
If you have a lot of photos, videos, apps, or games to bring over to your new phone, then memory should be a decision to consider. The Pixel 3 comes with either 64GB or 128GB of memory, catering to the needs of most consumers.
A Pie-sized slice of Android
Android 9 Pie is out and present on the Google Pixel 3. This OS comes with the Google Assistant, so you need only say ‘Hey Google’ or squeeze the phone (Active Edge) to activate the assistant. Using your voice you can play music, get answers to a question, control your home or use the new call screening service, where the assistant asks who is calling and why, before accepting the call.
With Android Pie, you can also manage your Digital Wellbeing. You can flip the phone over to mute notifications, set timers to restrict app use, and schedule a Wind-Down time, which switches the display to greyscale and turns on Do Not Disturb.
Camera & Video
The Google Pixel 3 has a 12.2MP dual-pixel camera that allows you to shoot 4K video. Features that stand out include:
- Top Shot – A burst of photos are taken and Top Shot then automatically suggests the best image. The feature checks that everything is just right, looking for problems such as blinking or your hair being blown in your face.
- Night Sight – Arriving by an over-the-air update later in the year, this feature fuses a series of photos together and uses an extended exposure, so that you can take stunning night shots without a flash. Take a look at some of the examples because they are almost unbelievable.
- Flicker Sensor – Flickering is removed under indoor lighting conditions.
- Google Lens – Find information on the things you see such as landmarks. You can find products that you see online, add events to your calendar, and translate text.
- Super Res Zoom – Enjoy blur-free zooming with a 2x digital zoom equivalent to the same quality as 2x optical zoom.
The 8MP dual camera is perfect for Group Selfies with its wide-angle lens that offers 184% more room, for friends or background scenery. AI Photobooth removes the need to press the shutter button with a smile or funny expression, being recognised by the camera.
With Portrait Mode you can change the background blur after the shot. With Google Photos you benefit from free online storage of photos and 4K videos. The gallery can be searched by keyword or location.

Fast charging all-day battery
The Google Pixel 3 has a 2,915mAh battery, which should last all day. In the box, you will find an 18W fast charger, giving you seven hours use in only 15 minutes.
The Adaptive Battery software restricts battery usage of the apps that you use infrequently, ensuring the longest possible usage times. The Pixel 3 is also wireless charging compatible, should you wish to buy one.
