Asus Zenfone 6 review
Flip camera and killer specs
In our Asus Zenfone 6 review, we find a phone that has top-end specs and a clever flip camera that pushes photography in a new direction. This Asus phone comes in two versions with the 6GB RAM and 128GB memory model costing from £499, and the 8GB RAM and 256GB memory model costing from £599.
The Asus Zenfone 6 has a large 6.4” All-screen NanoEdge Display with Full HD+ resolution (2,340x 1,080 pixels). The NanoEdge Display truly fills more of the front face of the phone with a 92% screen-to-body ratio.

The display absolutely has the wow factor with a cinema-grade colour gamut and vivid colours, even under bright sunshine. The display can push out up to 600 nits of brightness, and this is the highest level we can remember seeing in recent times.

A blue light filter protects your eyes from strain in the evening. Corning Gorilla Glass 6, which is the most drop-resistant version yet, helps to prevent damage from repeated drops at up to one metre.
The Asus Zenfone 6 has a 3D-curved rear glass cover and you can choose between Midnight Black or Twilight Silver. The phone has an average weight at 190g, and is slightly thicker than some phones at 9.1mm, probably because of the flip camera design.
The Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 octa-core 2.84Ghz processor is Qualcomm’s fastest mobile chip yet. This delivers up to 45% faster processing and 20% faster graphics processing.
Asus has added OptiFlex and this technology allocates resources to the apps you use most. It also pre-loads apps in the background so you don’t need to wait for them to open.

Phone Set Up
Security and expandable memory
The Asus Zenfone 6 has a rear fingerprint sensor and this unlocks with up to five fingerprints, in just 0.3 seconds. The phone has three card slots, so you can have a dual SIM setup and still insert an up to 2TB memory card.
Powered by the Android 9 Pie operating system, you get handy apps from Google and Asus. The Zenfone 6 is refined by Asus’ ZenUI 6 user interface and this is both fast and smooth.
The interface has been designed with one-handed operation in mind, meaning that the app icons are positioned in just the right place. The look of the interface is also excellent with a new Dark Mode and smooth animations when opening apps or view recent apps.
A few ‘Smart’ features from Asus include:
- Smart Volume - the loudness of the ringtone is automatically adjusted to the environmental noise around you, ensuring you never miss a call
- Smart Key - trigger customised commands or three Google Assistant actions with a single tap, double-tap, or long press
If you love your music then the Zenfone 6 is going to delight you. There are stereo dynamic speakers with dual low-distortion smart amplifiers. Audio enhancements include Hi-Res Audio (4x better than CD quality), 7.1 surround sound, and AudioWizard listening profiles.
In the box, you will find a gift from Asus, in the form of a pair of ZenEar Pro Hi-Res earphones.
Camera & Video
If you love a gimmick then the flip camera is going to catch your eye and spur your imagination. The flip camera module is made from advanced liquid metal (amorphous alloy), which is tough, light, and precisely machined. Compared to stainless steel, this alloy is 4x tougher and 80% of the weight.

The flip camera has a dual lens with a primary 48MP Sony lens and a secondary 13MP Ultrawide lens. The Ultrawide lens can capture wide landscapes of 125-degrees and is also perfect for group selfie shots.

- Free-angle shooting – you control the angle of the flip camera making it easy to shoot up or down, into a canyon for example
- Super Night Mode – this combines multiple images at different exposure levels
- HDR+ Enhanced – this combines multiple short-exposure images together for precise shadows and highlight details
- Motion Tracking – the flip camera will track any moving subject or object that you focus on
Further camera features include Auto-Panorama, Portrait Mode, AI Scene Detection, eight filters, 4K quality video recording, Time Lapse, and Slow Motion video recording at 240 frames per second.

- 33 hours talk time
- 24 hours of video playback
There is an 18W charger in the box and this phone supports Quick Charge 4.0.
