Asus Zenfone 4 review
Asus Zenfone 4 review
Premium build and photography
Our Asus ZenFone 4 review follows our Asus ZenFone 4 Max review and we mention this because the Max is nothing like the ZenFone 4. The Max has a big battery but weak spec, while the Asus ZenFone 4 has a premium build, premium features and pro-grade photography.
Aluminium and glass design
The Asus ZenFone 4 has a premium build quality with a solid aluminium unibody and no unsightly camera bump protruding out of the back. The front and back face are made from super strong 2.5D Corning Gorilla Glass and design features include a diamond cut metal edge, micro-etched with concentric circle detail.

This Asus phone is nice and light at 165g and thin at 7.5mm thick. The ZenFone 4 is available in Moonlight White or Midnight Black and it has a modern and sleek look created by a small screen bezel of just 2.1mm.
Screen and processor
The Asus ZenFone 4 has a large 5.5” Super IPS+ Full HD display, giving it a great resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. The display stands out really well with a brightness of up to 600nits, which is bright enough for use outdoors and under sunlight.

Asus Splendid technology is also in play and this adjust the colour temperature of the display based on the environmental lighting. This reduces eyestrain and there is a blue light filter for eyestrain-free viewing in the evening.
New: HTC U11 Life review
The ZenFone 4 is powered by a fast Qualcomm Snapdragon 2.2GHz octa-core processor. This is high-end and has Low Power Plus power saving technology and 4GB of RAM.
Phone Set Up
Biometric security and transferring content
The Asus ZenFone 4 has a fingerprint sensor built into the home key. You can register up to five fingerprints and these will be recognised in just 0.3 seconds. The fingerprint sensor works well and can read a fingerprint through a full 360°.
Content from an old smartphone can be transferred onto the 64GB memory. If you are looking for a phone to shoot and keep lots of 4K video on, then the ZenFone 4 can accommodate this by expanding its memory through the up to 2TB microSD card slot.
The Asus ZenFone 4 runs on Google’s Android Nougat operating system but this is optimised by Asus, through its ZenUI 4.0 user interface. The interface has been redesigned and given a minimalist layout, highlighting the most used and essential apps. An emphasis has been placed on ensuring apps launch as fast as possible.
A few of the features of ZenUI 4.0 includes:
- Gallery - Managed with AI facial recognition, the gallery automatically tags friends and organises photos into predefined groups.
- Game Genie - Live game streaming is optimised and a Speed Booster ensures lag-free gameplay.
- Twin Apps - Create a second version of apps so that, for example, you don’t need to log in and out of two Facebook accounts.
- Page Marker - Save web pages and articles for later reading.
- Lock Screen - Enjoy a lock screen slideshow.
The Asus ZenFone 4 is great for media enjoyment and it has dual speakers with an NXP Smart Amp for 40% improved performance. The phone can play Hi-Res Audio that is 4x better than CD quality.
Camera & Video
Dual camera with Sony image sensor
The Asus ZenFone 4 has a dual camera with a 12MP lens and a 8MP lens. The 12MP lens uses Sony’s premium image sensor and this has a f/1.8 aperture lens for capturing 5x brighter and lighter photos, in low light. The 8MP camera has a 120° wide angle lens for capturing a 200% wider field of view.
This wide field of view is excellent for shooting in confined spaces, where you wouldn’t be able to move backwards to get everyone into a group shot. It is also excellent for capturing much wider landscape scenes.
There is a lot of technology at play in the background that ensures the results are of professional quality. An RGB colour correction sensor ensures true to life colours are captured by detecting the type of light. This is particularly beneficial when photos are taken under artificial lights.
There is zero shutter lag with the 0.03 seconds Dual Pixel Phase Detection Auto Focus. Faster and smoother focus and zoom are also delivered through the Spectra 160 image signal processor. Photos are kept blur-free with optical image stabilisation, while videos (up to 4K quality) are kept shake free with electronic image stabilisation.
There are 12 PixelMaster camera modes on offer and included in this mix is Auto, Beauty, Pro, Super Resolution, Panorama, GIF Animation, Slow Motion and Time Lapse. You can shoot in Portrait Mode and capture bokeh effect blurred backgrounds or take 32 second long exposures, which are great for capturing the night sky.
The Asus ZenFone 4 has a 8MP selfie camera and this is paired up with the SelfieMaster app. The SelfieMaster app offers ten levels of beautification for tackling skin blemishes, wrinkles and skin tone, in both photos and videos. With social live streaming becoming popular, Asus has taken it to the next level with the BeautyLive live streaming feature.
The 3,300mAh battery is charged using the Asus BoostMaster fast charger and this gives up to two hours talk time from just five minutes charge or takes the battery to 50% capacity in 36 minutes.
