Our UK Apple iPhone XS Max review takes a look at the bigger XS model to see what Apple has to offer. The iPhone XS Max has been launched alongside the iPhone XS models, which is a more compact device with a smaller screen and battery. Overall the two models are essentially the same phone with some minor differences.
Super Retina HD display
The Apple iPhone XS Max has an impressive 6.5” Super Retina HD display. The screen has a resolution of 2688 x 1242 pixels. This means you get graphics and images with true blacks and accurate colour production.
Comparison: The iPhone XS has a 5.8” display with a resolution of 2436 x 1125 pixels.
The iPhone XS Max has been made from high-end materials and these include a surgical grade stainless steel band. The glass front and back fit seamlessly into this band and the glass is the most durable ever used on a smartphone.
The phone design looks superb in each of the available colours, which are Space Grey, Silver and Gold. The Apple iPhone remains quite slim at 7.7mm and it is a little heavier than the iPhone XS at 208g.
Comparison: The iPhone XS weights 177g.
The iPhone XS Max has been IP68 certified for dust and water resistance. This means you won’t have to worry if you get caught in the rain or splash the phone. It can actually survive being submerged in up to 2 metres of water for 30 minutes.
A12 Bionic chip
The A12 Bionic octa-core chip has the next-generation Neural Engine and supports AR gaming, AR experiences and 3D games. As with each iPhone release, Apple has made the processor even better than its predecessor with:
- 50% faster graphics performance
- 15% faster performance cores
- 50% lower power usage on the efficiency cores
Phone Set Up
Enhanced Face ID
Face ID has been improved to be even faster and works with a map of your facial features, made up of 30,000 focal points. It has been enhanced to seem almost instant and it can even recognise you if you are wearing glasses or have put on a hat. The advanced facial recognition software can be used to make payments with Apple Pay or to log into apps.
iPhone Memory options
You can buy the iPhone XS Max based upon the amount of memory you think you will need. The memory options are 64GB, 256GB or 512GB, you can opt for the one that best allows for you to transfer your content over from your current phone.
Latest iOS 12
The newly updated iOS 12 delivers a large range of features and improvements to your favourite iOS apps. The iPhone XS Max has a comprehensive suite of apps already on board including:

Wider stereo sound
The Apple iPhone XS Max has been improved with wider stereo sound. Entertainment is now even better with HDR10 with support for Dolby Vision. This means you get the best quality when watching iTunes, Netflix and Amazon Prime Video. A pair of EarPods are included in the box for when you no longer want to listen out loud.
Camera & Video
Dual rear camera
The Apple iPhone XS Max features a dual 12MP rear camera that is made up of a wide angle lens and a telephoto lens. The camera set up allows you to use the Depth Control feature to change the background blur or create enhanced bokeh effects. The Portrait Mode allows you to capture professional looking shots in different ways. You can further enhance portrait photos with five Portrait Lighting effects:
- Stage Mono
The iPhone XS Max includes Smart HDR which is twice as fast and uses a second image to accurately capture shadow and highlight details. There is a new sensor to reduce low-light noise and to capture colours more accurately. You can also record superb 4K quality video with stereo sound. Other video recording options include time-lapse with stabilisation and slo-mo video capture.

7MP TrueDepth camera
The 7MP camera includes Portrait Mode for selfies and you get the same lighting options as on the rear camera. There are Animoji and Memoji options to create animated versions of yourself. The new Memoji avatars track 50 facial muscles, so they move and have facial expressions that perfectly mimic your own.
Improved battery efficiency
The battery in the Apple iPhone XS Max has been improved thanks to the super-efficient A12 Bionic chip. The battery can be charged wirelessly or through a cable. The battery is fast-charge capable, this gives you up to 50% charge in just 30 minutes.
With the iPhone XS Max you should get:

- Internet browsing - Up to 13 hours
- Music playback - Up to 65 hours
- Video playback - Up to 15 hours
