We have mentioned that this is a budget Alcatel phone and that equates to handset only price of £89.99 or a from £11.99 per month on a contract.
Although the Alcatel U5 is affordable it does have some nice design qualities. The back cover has a micro-pattern texture imprinted into it. This curves softly around to meet the sides, where we also find a textured power button.
The Alcatel U5 is 9.95mm thick and weighs in at 168g. On the top edge we find the 3.5mm audio jack, while on the bottom we find the microUSB port.
The Alcatel U5 has a large 5” display with FWVGA resolution (854 x 480 pixels). This resolution is adequate for web browsing and standard gaming. Inside, a MediaTek quad-core 1.1GHz processor with 1GB RAM powers the experience and the performance is inline with that of other phones in the same pricing bracket.
Phone Set Up
Transferring content and security
The Alcatel U5 has a limited 8GB internal memory for transferring content onto, from an old smartphone or Apple iPhone. The good news is that there is a microSD card slot, so you can quickly and cheaply add memory, as needed.
There is a standard set of security protocols that can be used to secure this Alcatel phone. These include PIN, pattern and password.
The Alcatel U5 runs Google’s Android Marshmallow operating system and this brings with it a series of pre-loaded apps:
- Chrome - Web browser
- Gmail - Email client
- Maps - GPS navigation
- YouTube - Media streaming
- Play Music - Music player
- Drive - Cloud storage
- Play Movies & TV - Purchase or rent movies and TV
- Duo - Video calling
- Photos - Photo backup
- Keep - Note taking with time or location based reminders
There are also some useful features that are worth a mention. First is Turbo Download and this uses 4G and Wi-Fi at the same time, in order to quickly download files of over 20MB.
The Phone Guard app can be used to boost performance, protect against viruses and save battery power. Screen Capture can be used to take screenshots and Simple Mode can be used to give a basic interface, for technophobes.
