Alcatel OneTouch Idol 3 review
A premium smartphone with a unique twist
Our Alcatel OneTouch Idol 3 review reveals a smartphone of the highest quality and an attractive alternative for those who want something that isn’t a Samsung or Apple creation.
The brushed metallic body with silver highlights applied next to either a black, silver or gold colour scheme project the Alcatel OneTouch Idol 3’s design into the realms of the gods. Everything looks as it should and the perfect symmetry will make this smartphone one of the best looking in 2015.
The symmetry is more than just a design consideration though as speakers and microphones at the top and bottom effectively gives this phone no top or bottom. No matter which way you pick up the Idol 3 the interface will adjust its orientation and calls can be answered either way up.
The only indication of top and bottom is the idol logo on the back and the volume and power buttons which in themselves have a dual colour diamond-cut effect. On the front we see a large 5.5” screen with a top notch resolution of 1080 x 1920 pixels.
Keep up to Date
Fill in the form and be the first to know when the Alcatel OneTouch Idol 3 is released.
The screen is visually vibrant even under sunlight and the Technicolour Colour Enhance technology gives a luminescent edge to colour rendering. A choice of memory options are available but shouldn’t be a huge consideration as the 16 or 32GB options can be boosted with a 128GB microSD card.
Phone Set Up
A 64-bit octa-core processor with 2GB RAM is included and required in order to run the latest Android Lollipop v5.0 operating system. Choosing a smartphone with Android is a smart choice as you get a host of Google services like Search, the Chrome Browser and Gmail as well as access to Google Play for app downloads.
The latest version of Android also means that the Alcatel OneTouch Idol 3 is less hungry on power and has the new redesigned and circular set of app and feature icons.
One of the best elements of the Alcatel OneTouch Idol 3 is its audio performance. Alcatel OneTouch teamed up with JBL Audio to deliver a head banging package that includes two forward facing speakers with Clari-Fi tech. This effectively restores the original music quality that is usually lost when music files are compressed.
3D surround sound helps to project your playback and there is a very entertaining OneTouch Mix music app that allows you to download, stream and mix music tracks together. You will also find Deezer and Rdio apps pre-installed and these can stream music over 4G or Wi-Fi.

Camera & Video
The 13MP camera on the Alcatel OneTouch Idol 3 is absolutely fantastic and the large aperture collects more light under low-light conditions while the Auto Scene Detection takes the guess work out of choosing the right camera settings.
The 8MP selfie camera delivers without a doubt the best self portrait results possible and the 84° viewing angle on this secondary camera permits group selfies where everyone is ensured to be in the picture.
To round things off there is Fast Face Focus which takes only 0.15 seconds to recognise and focus on faces and real-time HDR video recording is available for those who like to capture life in motion.
The 2,910mAh battery has plenty of capacity to get you through the day and you should be able to achieve up to 13 hours of talk time from one charge.
Alcatel OneTouch Idol 3 verdict: This smartphone proves that other manufacturers can produce absolutely exquisite phones with their own innovation and I wouldn’t hesitate in snapping one up.
If your budget is slightly restricted then fear not. The Alcatel OneTouch Idol 3 is also supplied in a slightly smaller form with a few reductions in spec, but nevertheless a great buy. Instead you will get a 4.7” display with a resolution of 720 x 1280 pixels, a choice of 8 or 16GB’s of memory, a quad-core processor with 1GB RAM, a 5MP selfie camera and a 2,000mAh battery.
