We first glimpsed ZTE’s latest smartphone featuring the Firefox operating system at MWC this year, but until now there had been no sight of it in the UK or US. However, it has emerged that the device will be sold exclusively via the online store eBay to the British and American market.
The phone itself sports a 3.5 inch screen, a 1GHz processor and a 3.2MP camera, though it is in fact the device’s operating system which makes it stand apart from other budget smartphones.
The Firefox OS is based on HTML5 rather than a company-owned system, which makes it open for all manufacturers to adopt on their devices. The operating system has been heralded a totally unique take on systems by Google, Microsoft and Apple, which currently dominate the market.
The decision to sell the ZTE smartphone solely via eBay is an unusual one, and perhaps suggests that the device- not the operating system- is ready to compete against the big guns such as iOS, Android BB10 and Windows Phone 8.
That said, the phone is a reasonably priced smartphone which is easy to purchase online for just £59.99 SIM free.
