Former Mobilephones.com app if the week, Waze, has hit the news over recent weeks due to negotiations to buy the app, with it now emerging that Google is the lucky bidder.
Waze is a community-based navigation app which doesn’t just direct you like ordinary navigation apps, but also allows users to contribute to real-time traffic, accident and police reports on our roads. The app becomes a social platform for road users to warn- and be warned by- others about obstacles that might interfere with a car journey.
Google sees the takeover of Waze as a perfect opportunity to improve and extend its Google Maps services, though it is believed that both Apple and Facebook were interested in purchasing the Israeli company.
Although neither company has confirmed the deal, it has been reported that Google bought the app for $1.3bn, which equates to around £835m.
