The Casio WSD-F20 tops the news this week as it will be one of the very first smartwatches to be released with the Android Wear 2.0 operating system.
Casio’s new smartwatch will launch on the 21st April 2017 and Android Wear 2.0 will deliver more standalone apps, Android Pay and the Google Assistant. The wearable is clearly aimed at outdoor types and will be available in Orange (WSD-F20-RG) and black (WSD-F20-BK).
The Casio WSD-F20 will deliver GPS with full colour maps and your location is determined through the use of energy-efficient GPS. Your location is shown on an offline map and these maps need to be downloaded first, through Casio’s partnership with Mapbox.
The map can be switched between several modes, including dark, light, outdoor, streets-satellite and streets views. Memos can be added to your maps with voice input or footprints of your actions can be shown with record markers.
The Casio WSD-F20 is water resistant to 50 metres and the design incorporates a water resistant microphone. This smartphone is also truly sturdy with testing to MIL-STD-810G proving its resistant to drops, vibrations and extreme outdoor conditions.

The smartwatch has a 1.32” dual-layer display (320 x 300 pixels) and the dual-layer structure enables features to be superimposed onto either a monochrome or a colour LCD display. The time is always shown on the monochrome LCD and this employs Power Saving technology, while always being readable under direct sunlight.
The colour LCD layer is used to show measurement data and apps. The visibility of these are improved greatly by being displayed on the dedicated colour LCD layer.
The design of the Casio WSD-F20 makes use of three buttons; TOOL button, APP button and Power button. The watch can be recharged in two hours and a full charge offers one days use or more than one months use, if the watch is simply run in Timepiece Mode.

At 92g, the watch is far lighter than a smartphone and it has dimensions of 62 x 56 x 16mm.
The Casio WSD-F20 runs Android Wear 2.0, which includes Gmail, Google Maps, Google Fit, Google Voice Search and weather forecasts. Casio has then added a selection of apps to give even more functionality:
The TOOL button is used to switch the view on the high-visibility monochrome display. It rotates through the compass, altitude, atmospheric pressure, sunrise / sunset times, activity graph and tide graph views.
Casio also recommends apps for downloading, including the MyRadar weather app, YAMAP or ViewRanger GPS apps for hiking.
The Casio WSD-F20 is compatible with smartphones running Android 4.3 or later. The smartwatch can also be paired with an iPhone 5 or later, running on at least iOS9.
