Apple stops online sales of the iPhone in Russia

Smartphone fans in Russia are in for a shock today as they discover that Apple has ceased selling Apple products including the iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus and iPad’s online.

In a county where Apple does not have official Apple Stores this effectively cuts off the Russian population in the near-time from enjoying Apple products.

In an email from Alan Hely, he stated “Our online store in Russia is currently unavailable while we review pricing,”, The Cupertino, California-based company spokesman continued “We apologize to customers for any inconvenience.”

Russia’s Ruble has been on a downward trend against the US Dollar since Western sanctions were imposed during the Ukraine crisis which has recently been followed by cheaper oil prices. In an attempt to tackle this Russia increases its interest rates from 10.5% to 17% this week.

Despite Russian efforts, the value of the Ruble has become too volatile loosing 20% of its value this week. This has made it impossible for prices to be set by the tech giant. In November Apple increased it prices for the Apple iPhone 6 in Russian by 25% after Russia became the cheapest place in Europe to get Apple device.

Last year Apple iPhone sales in Russia (1.5 million) only accounted for 1% of its global sales which amounted to just over 153 million according to reacher IDC. The picture was looking slightly better this year with 1.9 million sales by the end of September.
