4G comes to Mount Everest thanks to Huawei

EE might have doubled its 4G speeds across the UK yesterday but Chinese firm Huawei have done one better, setting up a 4G LTE connection at the base of Mount Everest.

The availability of a 4G service in the region will mean mountaineers can now live stream the view from the mountain using their 4G compatible smartphones. China Mobile last month demonstrated this by offering a live stream, using 4G service, of the view 5,200 feet above sea level.

“Bringing 4G to Mount Everest marks an important milestone in global LTE TDD development,” stated David Wang, president of Huawei Wireless Networks, “We are very excited to make this possible, and look forward to working with more operators worldwide to bring high-speed mobile broadband services anytime and anywhere.”
