Nokia's new N96 is a dual slide opening 3G Smartphone - a combination of the smooth, silky N81 and powerful, uncompromising N95. Its features - and there are many - include a front-mounted VGA camera for video calls, a five megapixel camera in the back, quadband GSM, dual-band HSDPA, QVGA display, a microSD expansion slot, 802.11b/g WiFi, stereo Bluetooth, Symbian OS 9.3, aGPS, 3.5mm audio out, FM radio with RDS, DVB-H.
It also sports a special dual slide design opening mechanism that allows you to slide open the handset to suit your needs. Considering the advanced technologies, the N92 remains compact and highly useable: 103mm x 55mm x 18mm, weighing 125 g. There is 16 GB of built-in memory, 128 MB of RAM and 256 MB of system memory, plus a MicroSD™ memory card slot for further storage capabilities.
Its excellent 2.8-inch colour screen dominates the front of the N96, viewable in horizontal or vertical mode. The screen displays up to 16 million colours on a QVGA LCD screen with a screen resolution of 240 pixels by 320 pixels. The main camera sports a Carl Zeiss optics Tessar™ lens, with auto focus and auto exposure features. The flash is a dual LED flash which will light up even the darkest surrounding. It supports MPEG4 video format and a built in video stabiliser counters camera shake.
The second camera at the front is a VGA camera for 3G video calling or for capturing a self portrait. Then N96 comes with TV broadcasting capabilities, allowing you to enjoy DVB H live TV broadcasts on the crystal clear screen. A built-in GPS receiver and navigation system enables you to get step-by-step directions to a location. You can download over 150 maps to help you get around and the system provides location information and satellite pictures.
It includes 3G HSDPA technology plus EDGE technology for fast data transfer rates and WLAN Wi-Fi technology for a wireless connection at broadband speeds, augmenting a USB cabled connection between devices and built-in Bluetooth® short-range wireless technology.
Battery life is modest - but it is being asked to support big applications: rated at three hours of talk time and 220 hours on standby.
