Samsung Solid M110

The Samsung M110 is also know as the Samsung Solid: it is a highly robust handset which, says the manufacturer, will withhold ingress of dust and water as well as being able to survive a drop on to a hard surface from up to a metre.

The casing is a rubber material and the handset is fully sealed to protect it from water splashes and dust damage. However, the feature set of the M110 is unashamedly basic but practical. The CSTN screen is 1.5-inches diagonal, displaying up to 65,000 colours with a screen resolution of 128 x128 pixels. Its dimensions are 109 x 48 x 17.9 mm, weighing 95g.

Versatile and hard wearing, the M110's built-in messaging services include text messaging, multimedia messaging and enhanced messaging - you can share your pictures with other compatible messaging contacts. A built-in SOS message feature allows you to send an SOS message when required - it is easy to access for emergencies.

Its VGA digital camera feature has a zoom option, using the CSTN screen as a viewfinder; there is a integral radio and you can download games. A tad more practical on those Dartmoor yomps, the handset comes with a flash light at the touch of a button.

A dual-band phone (GSM 900 and 1800) for international roaming, the M110 also offers a WAP connection for XHTML Web page browsing and supports Bluetooth short-range wireless connectivity with compatible devices. The 2 MB internal memory can be expanded by a slot-in MicroSD card.

Battery life is rated at a healthy eight hours talk time and 400 hours on stand-by.

GPRS is mainly used for text based information - getting football results, checking train timetables, reading the news etc. GPRS is not bad at downloading pictures, however it is slower than 3G. You can use GPRS to received and send Multimedia messages such as a text with a picture.

It is advisable to choose a 3G handset for decent download speeds of videos and pictures rather than GPRS, however GPRS is pretty good for text based information and pictures with lower definition.
