The Samsung F400 is, taking its feature set and total specification into consideration, excellent value for money. It has a dual slide design allowing you to control whether you are using the phone as a music player or as a regular phone. The speaker produces good quality sound for playing music, so it is not a compromise. There is a wheel control on the front just like that on an ipod, used for controlling the music player.
If music on the move is a significant reason for having a phone, the F400 has a significant advantage as it uses a standard 3.5mm jack for headphones, so you can plug in your own rather than having to purchase a custom pair. It has a 3 megapixel camera - about par for the course and great for snaps rather than as a specialist camera phone.
The screen is nice and bright and fairly large for a mobile, so easier to read than on many of its contemporaries. The slider works smoothly and the keys are a good size, so sending text messages is straightfoward, with less chance of pressing the wrong key.
It has Bluetooth wireless and USB cable options for simple data exchange. With only 20 Mbytes' storage, however, the card slot is must - it supports up to 2 GB so capacity should not be problem.
The F400 has an excellent battery life - rated at over six hours' talk time: if you use it as a music player a lot and regularly as a phone, then expect to charge it up twice a week.
