Nokia's E series targets business users primarily, but each devices feature Nokia's familiar and highly user-friendly S60 interface running the tried and tested Symbian operating system. The Nokia E51 therefore combines compact dimensions, excellent communication features, a comfortable keyboard and stylish if conservative design: the makings of a classic all-round performer.

It measures 114.8 x 46 mm and its 12 mm slimness and 100g make for a smooth pocket line. The phone's functionality set focuses on data transer: MiniUSB v2.0, Bluetooth v2.0 with A2DP profile support, IrDA (115 kbps) for starters. There is GPRS, EDGE and 3G with HSDPA support - the Nokia 51 pushes the boat out on connectivity, including Wi-Fi 802.11g with VoIP over WLAN support. It offers a card slot for microSD cards up to 4GB capacity.

For Web browsing, even the most complex pages are accessible, fitting on the screen just like on a PC and the virtual mouse cursor makes browsing a pleasure. You can activate a mini-map to help navigating your way around large sites needing lots of scrolling. Scroll further and a preloaded semitransparent image overlays the page. The zoom level is adjustable with a few key strokes.

The time-management skills of Nokia E51 are really top-notch. We start the exploration of the large application package with the calendar. It has three different types of view - monthly, weekly and daily, and four types of events available for setting up - Meeting, Memo, Anniversary and To-do. Every event has its own unique fields, some of which allow an alarm to be activated at a preset time to act as a reminder.

The E51 is a quadband beauty (GSM/3G (with HSDPA 3.6 Mbps), EDGE and GPRS support) with all the time management and office features you could use, from an infrared port and document viewer to all the messaging formats (SMS, MMS, email and IM) and a 2 megapixel camera.

Battery life is rated at up to 4 hours 20 minutes talk time and 310 hours standby.
