The Nokia 5140i is presented as an "outdoor" phone - focusing on its rugged exterior that will, in truth, be able to withstand the knocks, drops and splashes that accompany the active sports enthusiast. It is undoubtedly tough and resistant to wear and tear. The outer shell can be replaced should it get scratched or scuffed. A bottom flap helps protect against water damage and there is an inner module to provide additional protection against water damage - and the keys are close together ostensibly for this reason, too.
The sports-inspired features include a torch, electronic compass and thermometer - a bizarre attempt to cover all aspects of the Great Outdoors, from the initial trek in the dark, through trying to find your way home to keep an eye out for overheating or hypothermia! The "Fitness Coach" application enables you to plan and record activities, as well share training data with training partners. There are also sports-related wallpapers, animated screensavers and MP3 ringtones.
There is a basic VGA camera (640 x 480 pixels) and video recorder with a rather odd choice of display: STN (passive matrix) technology which can be difficult to see outdoors: possibly a problem considering the target market for the Nokia 5140i. However, it's a fine piece of technology, benefiting from the classic Nokia design. It includes a stereo FM radio and an integrated handsfree speaker.
Connectivity options on this triband phone include an infrared port, GPRS and EDGE for fast data transfer and Internet use, caller ID with a chosen image from your own library and all the usual messaging options: SMS, MMS, email and IM.
Battery life is rated at between two and five hours, with up to 300 hours on standby.
