The Nokia 2630 started life as a business class phone that, like those grainy photographs of athletes in the 1930s training on cinder tracks and drinking Bovril, were the best of their generation, but have gradually been overtaken by modern ideas and methods. It includes now regular features including a (VGA) digital camera, video recorder and MP3/AAC music player, with a decent active TFT colour display with 65,536 colours. However, the screen resolution is relatively poor at 128 x 128 pixels.

The camera is easy to use with the phone display used as a viewfinder, and includes useful features such as a self timer function, 4 x digital zoom, a choice of standard, portrait and night modes and a choice of three image quality options: high, normal and basic. Another feature is Bluetooth wireless short-range connectivity and EDGE for fast Internet downloads.

Further features of the triband 2630 include Polyphonic ringtones, downloadable Java games and applications, 6 MB shared memory, speed dialling and voice dialling, a voice records, built-in stereo FM radio, handsfree operation and WAP (with GPRS as well as EDGE).

Battery standby time is rated at 150 hours and talktime at three hours minimum.

GPRS is mainly used for text based information - getting football results, checking train timetables, reading the news etc. GPRS is not bad at downloading pictures, however it is slower than 3G. You can use GPRS to received and send Multimedia messages such as a text with a picture.

It is advisable to choose a 3G handset for decent download speeds of videos and pictures rather than GPRS, however GPRS is pretty good for text based information and pictures with lower definition.
