Ultra-thin, stylish and comfortable, the Motorola KRZR K1 quadband (GSM 850/900/1800/1900) phone provides a solid feel at 102g while slipping neatly (103 x 42 x 16 mm) into a pocket or bag. The internal TFT display supports 262K colours and measures 1.9 inches (176 x 220 pixels) using Motorola's classic menu interface; the external CSTN display delivers 256K colours at 96 x 80 pixels.
The phone book holds 1,000 contacts while the SIM card holds an additional 250 names. Each entry holds five phone numbers, three emails, a Web site URL and three street addresses. You can organize contacts into groups or pair them with a photo or one of 30 (24-chord) polyphonic ring tones for caller ID.
Other features include a vibrate mode, a voice recorder, text and multimedia messaging, an alarm clock, calendar and calculator. There is a speakerphone, voice dialling and commands, USB connectivity, email, Bluetooth and PC syncing. At 20 MB, the onboard usable memory is not huge, but the Micro SD card slot - behind the battery cover - offers expansion room.
The K1's camera is a 2 megapixels affair, with four picture size options and three quality settings - but without a flash. Other options include multishot, brightness and white-balance controls, a self-timer, six colour effects, five lighting choices, an 8 x zoom and five shutter sounds (plus a silent option). The camcorder shoots clips in two resolutions (176 x 144 and 128 x 96) with sound; editing options are similar to the still camera. Videos meant for multimedia messages are limited to 21 seconds; otherwise you can shoot for as long as the available memory permits.
For sounds, the K1 provides a music player (MP3, AAC & AAC+) with dedicated music buttons, polyphonic & MP3 ringtones, stereo sounds, vibration alert and voice commands/dialling.
You can personalize K1 with a variety of wallpaper, screensavers, menu styles, and colour skins. If you want more options or more ring tones, you can download them via the WAP 2.0 wireless Web browser. Gamers get two Java (J2ME) titles: BlockBreaker Deluxe and Platinum Sudoku.
