RIM's BlackBerry Curve 8310 adds GPS capabilities to an already impressive device - a sleek smartphone with 2 megapixel camera and lots of trimmings. The ability to use your smartphone as a navigation device is particularly useful for mobile professionals who are constantly on the road. For the GPS, you give up integrated Wi-Fi, and there's no 3G support yet. It does mean you can use Curve as a handheld navigation device with the addition of a location-based service (LBS) or navigation software.
This Curve include Bluetooth for connecting to wireless headsets, Bluetooth stereo headsets, hands-free kits and over short distances, compatible devices such as laptop, for object exchange and dial-up networking. You can surf the Web via integrated EDGE technology.
For voice, the Curve is a quadband "world" phone with speakerphone, voice-activated dialing, smart dialing, conference calling and speed dial. The phone features advanced audio technology that cancels out background noise and echoes and will automatically increase the volume when you're in a noisy environment.
The phonebook is limited only by the available memory - the SIM card holds an additional 250 contacts -with room in each entry for eight phone numbers, email addresses, work and home addresses and many other categories. For caller ID, you can assign a photo to a contact as well a group category--business or personal -or one of 45 polyphonic ringtones. The Curve also supports MP3 and MIDI ringtones.
The device is compatible with any corporate BlackBerry Enterprise server with support for Microsoft Exchange, IBM Lotus Domino, or Novell GroupWise to deliver corporate email in real time. It supports as many as 10 accounts, including POP3 or IMAP4 email, with an email wizard to guide you through the set-up process. There is an attachment viewer to open most file formats, such as Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, PDFs, JPEG and GIF; other messaging options include text, multimedia, and instant messaging (IM using the proprietary BlackBerry Messenger client).
There is a 2 megapixel camera with a 5 x zoom and a built-in flash, but no video recording capabilities. The media player onboard supports all major file formats and there is 64 MB flash (internal) memory and a microSD card slot.
The Curve is rated for four hours of talk time up to 17 days of standby time.
