Rumours seem to be the life blood of the media when it comes to reporting about up and coming new smartphones and Sony at the moment is causing quite a stir.
Back in April there were plenty of reports that Sony would launch the mini version of the Sony Xperia Z2 which would have been called the Sony Xperia Z2 Compact.
However these rumours have died down over the last few months as it seems that Sony is likely to skip a mini version of the Z2 and instead launch the Sony Xperia Z3 Compact, possibly at the same time as the Sony Xperia Z3 itself.
Whilst we always take these rumours with a pinch of salt I suspect that we won’t have to wait too long for an official announcement which could happen in Berlin at the IFA 2014 consumer electronics trade show that runs for 5 days from the 5th September.
The most recent rumours have come from XDA developer DoomLoRD who released a screen capture of the ‘about page’ from reportedly an Xperia Z3 Compact smartphone.
So here is a run down of what we can deduce from that screen shot.
For me Sony is undoubtedly the king when it comes making smaller versions of their flagship devices.
Whilst you will lose a few pixels by owning a mini smartphone the remaining specifications of the Compact will match those of the Xperia Z3 and this is something that no other manufacture has been able to achieve.

For me the release or leak of these basic specifications does little to whet my appetite but I know that Sony will have a great range of ‘true’ features to announce and this is what will get me excited.
If you want a taster of what I am talking about then take a look at my in-depth hands-on with the Sony Xperia T3 article. After all I imagine that all of the amazing features I highlighted on the T3 will be included in the future release of both the Xperia Z3 and Z3 Compact.
