Rumours seem to be the life blood of the media when it comes to reporting about up and coming new smartphones and Sony at the moment is causing quite a stir.

Back in April there were plenty of reports that Sony would launch the mini version of the Sony Xperia Z2 which would have been called the Sony Xperia Z2 Compact.

However these rumours have died down over the last few months as it seems that Sony is likely to skip a mini version of the Z2 and instead launch the Sony Xperia Z3 Compact, possibly at the same time as the Sony Xperia Z3 itself.

Xperia Z3 vs Xperia Z3 Compact

Whilst we always take these rumours with a pinch of salt I suspect that we won’t have to wait too long for an official announcement which could happen in Berlin at the IFA 2014 consumer electronics trade show that runs for 5 days from the 5th September.

Sony Xperia Z3 Compact

The most recent rumours have come from XDA developer DoomLoRD who released a screen capture of the ‘about page’ from reportedly an Xperia Z3 Compact smartphone.

Larger screen smaller bevels

So here is a run down of what we can deduce from that screen shot.

  • Screen - A 4.5-inch display, which is 0.2-inches larger than the Xperia Z1 Compact, is expected and whilst this is larger than it’s predecessor’s a smaller bevel will be used to keep the overall dimensions the same (65 x 127 mm). The resolutions is reported to be 720 x 1280 pixels which gives a pixel density of 326ppi.
  • Processor - A Quad-core Snapdragon 801 2.5GHz processor will be used to give excellent performance working in conjunction with an Adreno 330 GPU and 2GB RAM.
  • Camera - We will once again see a 20.7 megapixel camera and whilst it may be a surprise to some that the megapixels haven’t been upped I hear that Sony has developed a curved sensor, just like the human eye, that will improve quality once again.
  • Secondary Camera - A 2.1 megapixel forward facing camera will take care of video calling and selfies.
  • Operating System - Android v4.4.2 KitKat.
  • Design - All of the Z series of smartphone from Sony have been dust and water resistant so we should expect to see this again on the Z3 Compact. I have also heard that a Metal frame coated with PVD (Physical Vapor Deposition) will be used for increased resistance to scratches upon impact.
  • Audio - Dual front-facing speakers will help produce sounds and music that isn’t muffled, just like the HTC One and HTC One M8, when the phone is placed on a table.
  • Connectivity - The internet may be browsed using 4G or Wi-Fi while Bluetooth, NFC and GPS take care of the remaining wireless connectivity possibilities.

Sony Xperia Z3 vs Xperia Z3 Compact

For me Sony is undoubtedly the king when it comes making smaller versions of their flagship devices.

Sony Xperia Z1 Compact

Whilst you will lose a few pixels by owning a mini smartphone the remaining specifications of the Compact will match those of the Xperia Z3 and this is something that no other manufacture has been able to achieve.

Xperia Z3 Compact colours

For me the release or leak of these basic specifications does little to whet my appetite but I know that Sony will have a great range of ‘true’ features to announce and this is what will get me excited.

If you want a taster of what I am talking about then take a look at my in-depth hands-on with the Sony Xperia T3 article. After all I imagine that all of the amazing features I highlighted on the T3 will be included in the future release of both the Xperia Z3 and Z3 Compact.
