Should a phone look like a phone or a camera?

Camera phones

The mobile phone has been with us for many years and for most it is like an extra limb.

We have seen the technology take us from phone to smartphone and since that day almost every mobile phone has come supplied with a built in camera.

And with this in mind maybe it is time to discuss whether a phone should look like a phone or a camera.

Phones that look like cameras

There are two stand-out models that are current at the moment that really do look like cameras. They are the Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom and the Nokia Lumia 1020.

I have to say that they both catch the eye and at a time when nearly all smartphones look the same these two devices are seriously catching my eye.

So let’s take a look at the delicious curves that are tempting me into a new purchase.

The LED flash, light sensor and 16 megapixel lens all look authentically like those of a compact camera.

The tradition camera layout allows for a shutter button to be placed where you would expect it.

The Nokia Lumia 1020 maintains a slim line look here but does show off a characteristic compact camera lens design.

Here coloured camera grips transform the shape of the Nokia Lumia 1020 into that of a compact camera with a shutter button located in the bulge.

You can even go professional with a camera tripod accessory.

The Discussion

There are two factors that I believe should be considered when choosing between these two phones.

The first is weight with the Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom weighing in at 208g whilst the Nokia Lumia 1020 only weighs 148g, probably due to the extra camera curvature being offered via a camera grip accessory.

The second is camera resolution. The Samsung phone at 16 megapixels is out-weighed by 41 megapixels on the Nokia, but that optical zoom as opposed to a digital zoom would probably sway me to the Galaxy S4 Zoom. What do you think?
