Written by: Michael Brown

The Ashes 2013

The 2013 Ashes are without doubt the highlight of the year for most UK and Australian cricket fans. Following the event however may be tricky for some who have work commitments or other engagements that coincide with the event, in fact anyone who leaves the home will undoubtedly want to check-in to keep abreast of the latest developments.

The solution to this problem is however easily solved with the advent of the mobile phone app and here we take a look at the best apps to follow the Ashes.

Cricket Apps

ECB Cricket

This is a beautifully crafted cricket app that is so simple to use, yet full of information, that cricket fans of any age will have easy access to live scoring and news centred on the 2013 Ashes.

Upon opening the app you are presented with the My Teams page and this has easy to select tabs at the bottom of the screen for current and upcoming matches, news and videos, stats and a more info tab that contains resources to purchase tickets, choose a cricket wallpaper or view the ECB Cricket’s website, Twitter and Facebook pages.

ECB Cricket

The Ashes games are all listed on the opening screen, so you need simply to tap on the desired match to follow it or review it if the match is already underway or finished. The next screen that opens presents the scoreboard and match status. From here flick to the right for a detailed breakdown of each innings which includes the batting and bowling figures along with a summary of the fall of wickets.

Flicking further to right will open up the cricket matches Twitter feed followed by more match information.

Cricbuzz Cricket Scores & News

This smartphone app opens to a page with the headline cricket news stories and a thick banner at the top of this page displays the latest scores to recently completed or on-going games. This really lends itself well to those who want to get the latest scores as quickly as possible.

The Cricbuzz app also has a drop down menu from which detailed information can be found. These include a schedule, high definition photo gallery, player stats, ICC rankings, series stats and cricket on Twitter.

Cricket Apps

The cricket on Twitter page is without doubt the stand-out feature. Users can flick to the right to view many different Twitter feeds including @cricbuzz, cricketers, experts, teams and #Ashes followed by many more popular hash-tag terms.

Cricitch LIVE Cricket Scores

Tap on one of those matches listed on the homepage and all of the detailed information you could desire is on your phone and at your fingertips. All of the scoring figures can be accessed via small icons at the bottom of the page and these include the innings at a glance, match figures and over summary.

The match figures page has a great breakdown and again at the bottom of the screen are a new set of icons for further analysis. These include a batting, bowling, wicket, partnership and ball by ball report.

NDTV Cricket

The homepage of this app is one of the best at providing the most useful content in front of the user. A banner across the top of the page shows the latest match scores, just flick left or right to find different matches and below this are listed the top news stories and a banner at the bottom of the page lets users quickly access the various picture galleries.

The Ashes Online

A pop-up menu system is in effect to navigate through the app and features include the NDTV social feeds, schedule, stats, rankings and more.

Yahoo Cricket

The Yahoo cricket app is easy to use although it does switch between portrait and landscape views often. The opening screen displays live match reporting and beneath this there are options to view information about recent matches, upcoming matches, news, photos and teams.

2013 Ashes

Full score boards and commentary are offered to the user and teams page is excellent. Pick the England or Australian teams to see a list of squad members, each of which is accompanied by a profile and stats for test, ODI and T20 matches.

The Official ESPNcricinfo App

As far as apps go this one probably has all of the cricket info you could desire. The main page as with most of the other Ashes apps has a live score banner which can be flicked to the left and right to see different matches.

Beneath this are tabs for the news, fixtures, videos, photos and blogs. The blogs tab is a great feature that is fairly unique and offers a more opinionated viewpoint of the latest news.

#Rise

I will point out that the blue cricket ball at the top of screen that could be easily missed leads you through to another page that has audio and video files, rankings, snippets, points tables and world records in test, ODI and T20 matches.

CricketCompanion App

This cricket app takes a simplified approach to reporting on the Ashes and other cricket info. Essentially all of the information contained in the other best apps to follow the Ashes is found within but navigation and reporting is more of a text based approach as opposed to graphical.

CricketCompanion

This app would be perfect for those with minimal time to check the latest Ashes news as the no-fuss approach lets the pages load quickly

Interview with Julian Goode, Head of ECB Media;

Q. Why should our readers download your app and/or what is unique about your app?

A. As part of the free offering on our iPhone/Android app users can watch highlights of every session of the Investec Ashes; plus post-play pitch-side interview with England player of the day, and regular England team exclusives. This is on top of live ball by ball scores, live blog, full previews and match reports, squad profiles and match-day photo galleries.

Q. Are you interviewing any cricket players with reference to the Ashes and will these be available through the app?

A. We have daily interviews, both written and video, on ecb.co.uk – all of which is available via those apps. All the editorial and live scores are also available in our BlackBerry and Nokia apps.

Q. Are you creating any interactive services or competitions around the Ashes?

A. We have an on-going #RISE for England campaign through the Ashes, reflected in the exclusive video, player and social content pulled into the apps – and are asking fans to send their messages of support to the England Team….the best of which get displayed in the Team Room before every Investec Test!

Q. Will there be anything in the app or on your website that will appeal to younger readers who may be interested in learning to play cricket?

A. Our app is very match/news focused, but hopefully a lot of the video content and the visual scores display will appeal to younger users. Anyone interested in playing the game should go to www.ecb.co.uk/play to find out about all the forms of cricket they can take part on, whether playing or off the field.

Interview with Cricbuzz;

Q. Why should our readers download your app and/or what is unique about your app?

A. Cricbuzz is the most comprehensive cricket app available on Android and iOS platforms. It is the most downloaded cricket app on the Android platform and also the most highly rated cricket app on both platforms. On Android, it is the most highly rated sports app. The ratings are a reflection of what the large user base thinks about the Cricbuzz app.

The ball by ball coverage of international (and many domestic) matches, is not only the quickest and most reliable, it is also the most exhaustive. For e.g. for the Ashes, every ball including the practice games, will be covered live and live radio commentary will be available for the five tests. The unique 'notifications' feature will mean that the user never misses any important event during the Ashes.

Further, detailed news, editorial and statistical coverage will ensure that the Ashes are a truly enjoyable experience for the cricket lovers. Cricbuzz also has the option to provide an ads free experience to the users at a nominal fee.

Q. Are you interviewing any cricket players with reference to the Ashes and will these be available through the app?

A. Yes, several interviews shall be available throughout the series. Cricbuzz sources content from a number of sources such as PA Sports, AFP and many others, so a wide variety of content, including interviews will be available.

Q. Will there be anything in the app or on your website that will appeal to younger readers who may be interested in learning to play cricket?

A. We have a 'Cricket on Twitter' feature within the app for the young crowd with curated tweets from cricketers, experts and people following the Ashes (under the hash-tag Ashes). This gives a new dimension to following cricket. Users can link their twitter accounts with the app and reply to cricketers and retweet their favourite tweets and enjoy the Ashes with several fellow cricket fans on Twitter while they are following the game on the app. This will surely appeal to the younger users.

Interview with Cricitch;

Q.  Why should our readers download your app and/or what is unique about your app?

A. We have a very unique LIVE score view screen with animations and audio that will keep ardent fans hooked on to it quite easily.

Interview with Cricket Companion Co-founder Bilal Alam;

Q. Why should our readers download your app and/or what is unique about your app?

A. Our Free app provides a clean score card. When you are on the move, you are mostly interested in live scores. First of all, our app (as compared to others apps) is a neat score app rather than a Cricket Magazine, that takes you directly to the score card without the hassle to browse through several pages to reach your favourite game score. Secondly, we are the only app that supports all mobile platforms including Android, iOS, blackberry, Symbian/ java and Windows

Q. Are you interviewing any cricket players with reference to the Ashes and will these be available through the app?

A. No but we have a lot of content provided by our partners AFP/ Infoplum that includes interviews, pre and post match reviews, wagon wheels, player bios etc. just to list a few.

Q. Are you creating any interactive services or competitions around the Ashes?

A. Yes, our “Cricket Genius” competition not only lets you test your prediction skills but also win cash prizes. Also, the Cricket Companion fantasy cricket App “Dream XI” should be of interest to cricket enthusiast. Last but not the least our users love the comments section. There is a lot of participation in the comments section during a live game as it provides the opportunity to “have your say” on a live game.
